RPG Fan - 90/100
A game as jam-packed as Rune Factory 5 runs the risk of being overwhelming, but each facet works in tandem with the others so seamlessly that it blurs the lines between where one element ends and another begins. It spaces out the infinite gameplay loop of farming sims with simple but enjoyable dungeon crawling and tosses in an endearing cast of characters for good measure. Despite how full the game is, its likely you wont be able to get enough of it, as its enrapturing nature always leads into something else for you to do. Once youve settled into Rune Factory 5, youre in it for the long haul.

Hardcore Gamer - 80/100
Theres a lot to love in the gameplay loop, characters and endearing story, and thats what ties it together for anyone who can sit through the choppy framerate. For those who have been waiting for another entry in the series, Rune Factory 5 delivers more of what fans love in the brand new fantastic world of farming, taming and romance.

IGN - 60/100
Rune Factory 5 is entertainingly chewable fodder thanks to the soil fertilized by its predecessors, but its attempted leap to a 3D world leaves it struggling with lots of frustrating technical issues.

Siliconera - 50/100
If you need a farming-and-fighting fix, Rune Factory 5 is an option. It just isnt the best one out there. Its living in the shadow of its far superior siblings.

Sounds like it basically did what its predecessors did but with some technical issues. Well a so-so RF game is still a good game so heck yeah.

Aww I was hoping for more unanimous praise. I'm sure I'll play this someday, but hopefully that time is when performance issues have been solved.

Worth noting that it came out a year ago in Japan and the performance issues still haven't been fixed.

Im not a Rune Factory expert but this seems like the second disappointing game this week after Ghostwire Tokyo.

Hopefully Kirby will avoid this reception!

Def waiting for a PC release here, the performance looks truly awful. Hard to believe it apparently used to be even worse before patches in Japan!

*edit* any time I boot up a Rune Factory tho it's hard not to compare the OP unfavourably to Kaze no Traveller. 5's is gorgeous to watch tho

I've been interested in this since my previous foray into the series was Rune Factory 3 way back when and I've been thinking about getting back into it but argh those technical issues. I'd like to believe a patch irons them out but like Mac said it's been a year since it released in Japan so my hope isn't exactly high.

I swear every rune factory kind of interests me then the game ends up sucking so I never buy it.

2 probably comes the closest but even that's a pretty decent game.

RF4 gotta be in my GOATs list, as well with my pretty great memories with Frontier

RF 1-2 and Oceans are good?
Haven't ever checked them out, but a bunch of other series 3 was when I first learned about it and I assumed 3 was already upgrading on a lot of QoL stuff.

1 I enjoyed, 2 I enjoyed less, 3 was good, Oceans is....okay, haven't played 4 or Frontiers although I do have 4. That being said there is a pretty big difference that it probably isn't worth playing 1&2 anymore because some mechanics will be difficult to go back to. Rune points were horrible in the 1st game for instance.

Ladies alright but so far Ryker's at the top of the bachelor/ettes list, Priscilla's kind and Lucy's a fine tsundere. Martin's kinda hot, kinda a dick.

I had to pause for a few minutes from a dumb weather-climate joke Heinz told so he's got the best impression now (also wtf his whole intro scene)

I expect it to be released on PC eventually since it seems like all Story of Seasons games are now, even if it's a while after the console release.

I did admittedly not play Oceans so maybe it isn't I dunno

RF1-2 are good with the asterisk that they are very dated now so you gotta go in with a retro-gaming mindset for them. RF1 is better than 2 though.

So like with Etrian Odyssey or Atelier, if you like the setting or story more in those first 2 games, better to hope for a remake that updates the older entries with modern QoL stuff.

I don't think I could play vanilla Atelier Rorona anymore!
