Why? I personally think it's better to have the sun up later. Also the sun coming up later in the Summer is nice, would suck the sun rising super early.

So we end on gaining an hour instead of losing one I'm guessing

Depends on where in a time zone you live. If you live on the left edge of a time zone, where you functionally should be in the next time zone over, it makes more sense to drop it permanently rather than making DST permanent.

I prefer regular time over daylight savings time because it gives me an extra hour of sleep. No offense to those who want extra daylight in the summertime but I'll take the extra hour of sleep every time. If they can find a way to keep the extra hour of sleep lost when it changes to daylight savings time, then I'd be all for it but until they do, I want to keep the time as it is.

Also the vote was unanimous.

It's pretty much been inevitable for years. The whole point of Bush passing the law that changed the difference from being 6/6 to 8/4 was specifically meant to get people used to the idea of eventually making it a permanent thing without the twice-yearly shift.

The idea is to get people used to the idea of the "off" period being shorter and shorter, until you do away with it entirely. And if you do it over a long enough period of time, people will adjust and are less likely to complain as much. See the metaphor about the frog in a pot of boiling water.

It's still going to cause confusion as long as other nations continue to use it though (and a lot do), at least online (for things where time calculations matter). And Arizona's still going to be a mess unless they realign as well (because they've got their own weird thing going on right now).

They're also worse for people who live on the west side of them than they are for people on the east side of them.

The entire concept of time zones is absolutely terrible. Unfortunately they're also kind of necessary in a globalized world where information travels at the speed of light.

I prefer my much worse idea of reducing DST by 5 minutes every year. So instead of an hour, it's 55 minutes, then, 50 minutes, and so on!

I'd generally prefer dawn to come earlier in summer rather than later in winter, mainly because winter is already a cold dark miserable time when depression is soaring, so getting up early to go to work in total darkness sucks more than dawn just coming really early in summer.

I might feel differently if I lived somewhere where roosters were crowing at dawn, or where it's so hot that it would mean the day would already be unbearably hot by like 8am, but I don't.

Judgmentl thinks all doctors are conservatives, apparently. What a fucked up worldview.

https://www.news10.com/news/aasm-doctors-dont-support-daylight-saving-time/\

On March 13, most of the U.S. will spring their clocks forward one hour for the start of daylight saving time. However, sleep physicians at the American Academy of Sleep Medicine would rather see the U.S. turn to fixed, standard time year-round.

Although Jud's remark is even fucking stupider when you consider conservatives voted for permanent DST

I'm very happy. Most people don't understand what they're saying when they say "end DST!" and actually want sun later in the day. Glad the Senate did the right thing this time.

It passed the Senate, 100-0, which is frankly insane. House is controlled by Dems, so it should be easy to pass, and Biden's not gonna bother opposing a veto-proof super majority, even if he doesn't like it.
It becoming law is just a formality at this point.
Unfortunately, we still have to revert to Inferior Time this November, b/c the bill doesn't take effect until Nov 2023.

I guess it doesnt matter as much to me. Doesnt make much of a difference in my life personally. Between the two, if I had to choose, Id choose the winter time. But only because its a 6 hours difference from Zulu time (as opposed to 5 right now). And thats the easier math for me to transfer since Im use to it. Also, probably whichever time has the sun rising later, I guess. Mornings suck Im a night owl, though Other than that, nothing else really matters to me. Not like I have to change any clocks manually anymore

Im the opposite. I love the night, and really hate mornings. So, Id be fine with a little more night between the 2. Plus, it might make roads worse, which could mean more administrative leave

If this were the case, Id rather keep DST rather than change my work hours throughout the year Unlike the stay at home people, I go to my job (and like it). Id rather not have to worry about being early or late because my actual hours change That said, even if I had to stay home and work, I still couldnt be late

Pretty much. The absolute worst was when I had an 8 am class on mondays and would start walking at ~7:15 to get there. All of January? Dark. February? Mostly dark, but starting to get a bit lighter as the month went on, which continued into the first week of March so I could actually say the sun was up by the time I arrived. And then DST hit and it became 100% dark again. It genuinely took me a month to recover from what that did to my circadian rhythm. It was so miserable.

Meanwhile, if the sun comes up early? Buy blackout curtains and the problem's solved. It's a lot easier to fix that issue than it is to fix the issue of my soul refusing to get out of bed with me because it's too dark. On the flip side, more daylight in the evening is nice, but given that it's too cold in the winter to do much outside anyway, I'm not too broken up by it getting dark earlier.

In practice, I think ditching the time change should entail each state (or possibly even county, for some of the larger states) choosing which time zone they want to join, in which case they can alleviate that issue by picking a time zone that puts "high noon" (in terms of solar position) later in the day. That could potentially get a bit confusing, since it'd make time zone lines even more erratic than they already are, but people would get used to it eventually.
