Oh, that's what they mean by Turning Red.

it's one of those things that should be normalized, especially since much of the target audience is going to experience them, and the lead is a young girl going through puberty.

I thought it was completely obvious even in the very first trailer that it was a young teen's puberty flick.

Isn't this supposed to be a family movie?

Part of me thinks equating periods with literally turning into a bear is probably not good optics but I think the movie looks good regardless.

I can see it both ways.I personally hate any bodily function and can see how people can be put off about it. We don't need a movie about something like nightfall, when that is just as natural. But on the other hand I can see why some people would like to make it more of a thing. I was an adult when I found out just all the odds and end of a period and damn I feel bad for women there.

I mean, The Little Mermaid and Alice in Wonderland were both puberty metaphors.

I don't think anybody has an issue with broad metaphors about changing and growing up and feeling different even physically. But this seems a bit on-the-nose.

It would be like a Disney story about a boy who sometimes turns into a rock. And how he has to deal with how awkward it is when he turns "hard".

Yeah, they could do it, idk if it's going to go over well with everybody as a mainstream disney kids movie though.

One is an occasional embarassment boys mostly learn to control and which largely takes place during sleep.

The first time I had a period, I had no idea what was going on and it was terrifying. In the mid 90s there wasn't much in the way of publicly available educational material for girls, and my parents were pretty conservative. Menstruation has been treated like some obscure event, but it happens to 50% of the world for f*** sake

Public schools didn't have any education on the subject where you were? Given that this topic is referencing Disney it's worth nothing that Disney made an educational movie in the 50's going over periods. The only part where it goes off the rails is in adamantly sidestepping how pregnancy occurs.
