I got owned by a trap in the swamp.

The trap teleported me into a dungeon full of nigh unkillable crystal centipede mans. Also, because it is a dungeon, I cannot warp back out.

This is bullshit of the highest order. It is kinda funny. But still bullshit.

*Sees a bunch of worms made out of rocks staring at a crater with an eldritch symbol and shooting purple light out of their faces, unmoving*

Anyone know good places to find Smithing Stone [1]s?

That was almost my reaction to those strange rock worms but then I saw the middle symbol glowing as well, which led to a relatively simple boss. Not sure what triggers it though.

And hey riding Torrent through the swamp protects you from its nasty effect.

There's a metric ton of them in the mine near Agheel Lake. Also, the soldiers sometimes drop them when killed.

Did you find the hidden wolf dude in Mistwood Forest? He seems to have a questline associated with that boss. He pretty much solos that boss if you summon him for it.

I found an area that probably has good things for sorcery builds but its in the red swamp and I hate it!

I've just been going straight melee so far, thinking about increasing int since spells in this game look gorgeous... but yeah that sorcery village is traumatizing.

Ive played 100 games where there are climbable walls or outcroppings and I wonder if there is something cool if I go out of the way to climb them but its always nothing or an invisible wall at the top or something and I feel bad

This is the first game I can remember where the answer to Wait, can I climb up/down that has been yes 100% of the time

Its definitely got a similar Im trying to go do a thing, but then I get distracted and go do a bunch of other things and now Im somewhere halfway across the map quality that BotW had

yeah, but the other option is being compared to Ubisoft games. Open worlds all exist on a spectrum from Assassins Creed to BotW

I decided to see if I could just run all the way to the end of the game. I just spent nearly 3 hours underleveled trying to beat what I thought was a mandatory boss only to find out it was a dead end. The rewards werent even worth it either.

I would think the other option is Rockstar games. At least they still have their own style regardless of how outdated it is. Ubisoft on the other hand made an actual BotW clone.

Have you been to Limgrave Tunnels? It's at the northernmost point of the swamp, directly south of Gatefront Ruins. Lots of Smithing Stone [1] in there.

If you are having trouble just go in a different direction and try again later after you get stronger. Margit is supposed to block you the first time you reach there.

Yeah, Margit definitely feels much harder than any other early boss in a Souls game. I think the intention is to make it clear to you that it's a "yeah, you should be exploring more of the map and getting stronger and finding new abilities and come back to take this boss on later" sort of feeling. All of the other side bosses I've fought haven't been nearly as hard.

On my first try with the npc summon and spirit wolves I managed to get Margit down to 1/4 health with a non upgraded claymore. At no point did I feel like I had control of the fight. Went back out to explore a ton more, leveled up strength (it is historically the best stat), upgraded claymore to +4 or 5, then went back with npc summon and spirit jellyfish this time. Beat Margit no problem. Jellyfish is clutch.

So yeah I feel like a chump for not beating him solo but it would have taken a ton more tries and that challenge is better saved for a replay. The point is there are ways of making the game easier, youtube has a ton of videos dedicated to teaching you how. There's no shame in it.

Raya Lucaria - Not only do we get an awesome doggo boss fight, but the actual boss of the area starts off very similar to Deacons of the Deep, then it turns into a real fight on a lake with a full moon. Definitely reminiscent of the Rom fight. Really great stuff here.

like the game specifically told me this was a safe space where fighting wasn't allowed and all of a sudden there's this red scythe thing that killed me and did actually take my runes

That same thing happened to me in roundtable, I'm still confused about it. If it makes you feel better I have lost 3000+ souls several times now, including to that same invader. It's not a gigantic amount so it never bothered me.

Also there seems to be a terrific greatsword in the beginning area, agheel lake south near the bridge of sacrifice through an evergaol portal. Still not sure what triggers it though...

this is infuriating. there is no indication that you're about to face a boss like opponent you can't run away from. feels like a weird glitch honestly. like I'm stuck in the multiplayer mode or something.

Alright, ended up playing for twelve hours today. Finished Stormveil Castle and activated Godrick's Great Rune. I think the best way to describe this game is 'daunting'. After twelve hours, I still feel like I've barely scratched the surface of the opening area. Stormveil Castle especially, I could understand how someone might feel paralysed by choice. So many different routes and options available to you at all times. Even though I managed to explore a bunch of side areas and hidden sections of the castle, I know I still missed some stuff. Also, this happened at one point whilst I was exploring:

For anyone that's stuck on Margit, there's an item you can find that will hold him down for a bit.

You have to go to the Murkwater Cave I think. And fight Patches, then give the item he drops to the twins at the Table of Lost Grace and you can then buy it from them.

I think my main issue with sorcery is that it seems to do way too little damage? I don't really understand. I saved up enough rumes to boost my int to 22 and buy Glintblade Phalanx, the homing soulmass equivalent because those are always fun. And it just straight up deals less damage, takes longer to cast, and uses more FP than just spamming Great Glinstone Shard. I got another one called Rock Blast that is a cool giga drill shockwave...that takes 500 years to come out and deals as much damage as GGS for 3x the FP. What gives!?

Maybe I just need to go bum around Raya Lucracia until I find something that makes this work.

anyway, I was able to get my runes back by letting the offline invader npc kill me near the door on the right and then clipping my runes through

whew that sucked

Very first thing I did was head to the beach left of the starting point and explore than and find the cave that led to the island with the dragon church

looks like nothing else I can do here though until I get whatever currency I can use to buy those dragon spells

Yeah, had this exact experience. Luckily I didn't have a lot of Runes, but telling people it's a safe area but then including a surprise fight with an enemy that literally was able to kill me in a single hit is a bit of a cheap move.

That said, the number of bloodstains all over the place there was a clue...

Wow yea Siofra River is really pretty

This game hasn't quite clicked with me yet. First time playing a Souls game so the combination of difficulty, menus, and open world is kind of overwhelming.

I've gotten to Margit but only got him down to about half health after 3 tries and the help of an NPC summon. I think I'm supposed to use the jellyfish but I kept forgetting about it. I'll give it a few more tries before I go off exploring some more.

I did beat some mini boss in a cave with wolves, so that was good. Went into some catacombs with little gremlin things and got my ass handed to me by the boss, so left that for later. And I went into the middle of that circle with the little eyeball rock things and again got my ass handed to me by a boss.

I find the menu system to be overwhelming. Just trying to keep track of all the shit you pick up and how to equip it (or use it) and trying to make sense of the stats. It's a lot!

How do you get the jellyfish? I read that the girl gives it to you but she is in roundtable. Also the girl that gives the wolves just never showed up so I had to buy them. Margit annihilated the wolves super quick - I dont bother with them because they die so quickly. Ive been trying Margit solo for a bit - not much fun. Ive had fun in the open world though and taken down a couple of bigger enemies and it felt good.
