This is a pretty good video covering the numerous reasons Russia is invading Ukraine. It concludes that the biggest reason is b/c Russia is a petro state (one of the largest sources of oil AND natural gas) but Ukraine has significant reserves of both and if they were to be extracted, Russia would lose its power over Europe that its energy supply provides it.

I don't.
They have overwhelmingly supported Putin for years b/c they credit him w/ bringing Russia back to prominence after the fall of the USSR, while ignoring all the vile evil shit that pathetic little man has done.

I feel bad for the Ukrainian people, dying, being forced to flee, and having their country and economy shredded by the invading Russians.

The Russian people need to suffer. They need to be made angry. They need to rise up against Putin. None of them should be able to rest easy whilst their army is terrorizing Ukraine.

The irony of a post like this coming from an American.

Unfortunately, I think that may be more proof of that. At best, you'll see those forces surrender. At worst, they're going to start raiding/looting the civs in earnest.

Like... it's good to shit on the Russian army and all for morale reasons, but I think people are seriously underestimating how ugly this is going to get.

Well just hope the sanctions have the effect they need to. Once people stop being paid to commit to this, it'll hit a breaking point.

I misphrased. I don't believe that Russia has like... multiple armies or whatever. But what is happening right now seems pretty similar to other shit Russia has done before. And burning through your more worthless shit early on, while an incredibly stupid thing to do if you wanted to perform a Blitzkrieg, can transition to other stuff.

I'm just saying that it's a bad idea to hype to the point where we end up downplaying the risk and later the damage.

https://twitter.com/joelmgunter/status/1499016901963440128

Note that it seems that the general strategy here is to:
  1. surround area.
  2. demand surrender on pain of being reduced to rubble
  3. bombard until area is reduced to rubble.

It's not fallen into place everywhere just yet, especially because I think they may have orders to specifically not do that to key locations, but this is already causing a great deal of devastation in certain places, and the situation is only going to deteriorate. I'm glad that it hasn't been an absolute shit-show for the Ukrainians from the start, but... *shrug*

Edit: Note the Russians not having adequate food and water actually makes this strategy significantly more dangerous for the surrounded people, AND it means any prisoners that the Russians take are not likely to be fed and watered well either.

Right. Putin isn't just going to admit defeat and leave if the going gets tough. He shows all of the signs of being someone who will double down again and again until he wins, possibly all of the way up to using "tactical" nukes. Ukraine is almost certainly still going to "lose" militarily, but the manner in which they "lose" makes all of the difference in the world for the future reality in the area.

The Ukrainians have already proven that they just aren't doing to dissolve as a people and get assimilated. The harder they fight, the better their future situation...but there are very hard days ahead.

That's why getting Russia to back down on their own accord is the only real way to solve this, either because Putin can't keep funding this war or because he's ousted for ruining their economy with his efforts. As far as military prowess it's probably not going to just stop.

But, per my point, I don't think backing down is in Putin's playbook. He is going to do whatever it takes to get to a point where he can declare victory, although if the Ukrainians do well enough it might be a face-saving "victory".

The last thing in the world that Putin will do is to be viewed as backing down because of anything the West is doing. The only thing he appears to care about is appearing powerful in relation to the West.

Can someone inside Russia oust him? From everything I hear I doubt it...but stranger things have happened.

I think as Putin gets more desperate to make the kind of ingress he wants to on the country he might start pulling out more radical ways to try and gain ground. But I do think eventually something is going to have to break.

There doesn't seem to be any nationalistic reason to wage this war for the soldiers on the ground. I have to imagine if he can't keep paying for the war at some point they might stop fighting it.

That is an interesting wildcard. How much are Russian soldiers and their families willing to sacrifice? Russian history would suggest they'll put up with a lot, but this is the internet generation and it's an offensive (not defensive) war.

I don't think they'll revolt or anything, but if it gets bloody will we start seeing large numbers of Russian troops surrender? THAT could change the calculus.

With the rate of decline of the economy in Russia the war could become fiscally insoluble within a month. The unity shown by other countries in cutting Russian funding off is astronomical. They're going to be burning cash at an amazing rate to keep this going with soldier wages, munitions, and fuel driving down their reserves.

Kherson mayor indicates the city has fallen
From CNN's Nick Paton Walsh and Tim Lister

The mayor of the Ukrainian city of Kherson Ihor Kolykhaiev has said that the Ukrainian military is no longer in the city and that its inhabitants must now carry out the instructions of armed people who came to the citys administration indicating that the city has now fallen under Russian control.

The announcement on his Facebook page follows several days of pressure on Kherson by Russian forces who had surrounded the city.

Kherson is a strategically important city on an inlet from the Black Sea with a population of nearly 300,000. On Wednesday in Kyiv, the mayor had disputed Russian claims of control saying Ukrainian forces were still fighting in parts of the city. The new posting said Ukrainian forces had left.

The mayor also told the New York Times in an interview that a group of about 10 armed Russian officers, including the commander of forces attacking the city, entered the city hall building Wednesday. He said he was informed by the Russian officers that they were planning to set up a new administration similar to those in two Russian-backed separatist enclaves in eastern Ukraine, according to the NY Times interview.

What this means: If Kherson is now under Russian control, it would be a significant moment in the conflict, as it would mark the first major city seized by Russian forces.

Late Wednesday, Hennady Lahuta, the head of Kherson regional administration, issued a message saying: I ask everyone who is not at home now, or who is planning to go outside, not to do so. The occupiers are in all areas of the city and are very dangerous.

Without saying explicitly that the Russians controlled the city, mayor Kolykhaiev said on Wednesday night that there were armed visitors in the city executive committee today.

"The team and I are peaceful people, we had no weapons, there was no aggression from our side."

I didn't make any promises to them. I just have nothing to promise. I'm only interested in the normal life of our city! I just asked not to shoot people.

In his Facebook message, he went on to say, We do not have Armed Forces in the city, only civilians and people who want to LIVE here!

Kolykhaiev said that there were now new rules in the city, which included a curfew and restrictions on transport in and out of the city.

He said that another rule was that Pedestrians walk one by one, maximum two. Dont provoke the military.

He finished: Let it be for now. The flag above us is Ukrainian. And in order to keep it the same, these requirements will have to be met. I can't offer anything else.
