they won't go broke.

They are going to have a hard time accessing a significant portion of their funds that are housed in Western allied banking institutions though. I can see the sanctions also seizing their Western owned properties.

Of course this might actually be a windfall for Trump; his loans from Deutsche Bank where backed by the Kremlin and they are coming due (this year iirc) he may be able to successfully argue that the new sanctions legally prevent him from repaying those loans. Of course he would have to admit that his loans were indeed backed by the Kremlin, which would open a whole other can of worms all on it's own...

From The Guardian:

"18.48 EST
Earlier we reported that Vladimir Putin ordered his military to enter the Russian-controlled areas of south-east Ukraine following a decision to recognise the territories as independent states.

We now have video released by Ukraine appearing to show a column of military vehicles with their headlights on moving in convoy along a road. The officials said it was not possible to tell if the troops belonged to the regular Russian army, or were from Russian-controlled separatist units."

Also all State department personnel that had been previously relocated to eastern Ukraine have been order to leave for Poland immediately.

So far

They will ramp up as they attribute more actions to Russian aggression.

There was the cyber attacks on Ukraine last week that are still "unattributed" but will incur sanctions when they are officially attributed to Russia.

I mean, obviously Ukraine doesn't want to lose territory - but such a move would call Putin's "Peacekeeping Mission" bluff

Here's how this will go:
1) Putin wasn't going to put all of that on the border and do nothing: it would look like he backed down.
2) If he were going to attack Kiev he'd be doing it now
3) Putin has to know that internal Russian support for what he is doing would ebb quickly if Russia took many casualties attacking Ukraine. Russians can see what's going on.
4) Therefore, this is the "big move"...and it probably ends here militarily after a lot of yelling and sanctions. Given that Russia already occupies these areas there shouldn't be a huge battle.
5) The sanctions will be harder to implement and maintain given that these chunks are less important, frankly, than Crimea. Given everything said over the winter they will certainly be placed, but they will fade away after the world's attention shifts and someone sees a need to extend an olive branch to Russia. Putin/Russia will survive with China's help for those few years.
6) So...this will feel a lot like the Crimea episode after a few years. Maybe he'll bite off another chunk in a few more years if it suits him politically. Or maybe he'll infiltrate Ukraine's elections and get someone elected that he likes. Or maybe someone in Russia will actually figure out how to topple him.

He's accomplished what he claimed to want in the Russian media (protection for the theoretically oppressed Russians) and defied the West. Politically that's what he wanted to do.

I disagree with point 2. I feel he's likely either to claim the region then, when Kiev attacks, claim they were being hostile and aggressive and needed to be 'pacified' or something. Alternatively, he'll keep finding 'pro-Russia citizens' that need to be 'rescued' or whatever until there's no more Ukraine left. Then it will be on to, likely, Poland in so far as Europe is concerned (though I expect him to work on the asian nations first).

I agree: entering into brutal urban warfare does not appear to be in Putin's best interest.

See above. I agree that he'll keep finding areas to complain about and shift attention over time, but I believe he will continue to take slow bites over time (and create buffer/rump states dependent on Russia) without initiating major war. His "hand" isn't good enough to undergo sustained urban warfare and resistance movements as would happen with somewhere like Kiev.

Anyways, in the long run none of this does anything good for Russia: it keeps them a semi-pariah on the world stage and gets them...what? Occupation over a couple areas with few resources? It may or may not help keep Putin in power and satisfy his/their need to feel powerful, which is certainly his main concern...but it's a bad deal for Russia. Point being: this is counterproductive and they can't keep acting like this forever. (Although they can keep doing it for the foreseeable short term future if they prefer feeling powerful to economic activity)

The anti-vax movement predates the pandemic, but there has been amplification from many groups looking to destabilize western democracy, which does include Russia.
