Yep, I don't have to be doomed to get crushed by bosses or just utterly unusable. Shopkeeper is up there too because buying all that junk never runs them out of business, so it doesn't seem like too bad of a sunk cost!

Time mage. I will spend 99% of the game sitting on the bench taking it easy, and the 1% of the game that everything lines up in my favor, I get to make everyone else look bad.

the problem with shopkeeper is that, y'know, you have to be a shopkeeper. Retail jobs suck

Anyways, went for Time Mage. Who cares if I need to take a week long sabbatical to drop a pretty starstorm on someone's head? I can just rewind it afterwards!

I can attest to retail being dumb. I work at GNC, and some guy slipped up really badly and asked point blank: "Do you sell the coronavirus?"

the shop situation depends on whether it's in a traditional or mmo jRPG

mmo shopkeepers go super bankrupt, but single-player games for the most part just give the player money directly

No guarantee about whether or not the shopkeeper's town will be safe. Other than the shopkeeper, it's fun to see there's a decent spread of everything else...except the town greeter lol.

I work as a greeter, it is a thankless, boring job, even before the threat of doom. The only benefit is time to think and stare off in the distance.

Also, fuck that thief stat line. It's FFIX all over again (COULDN'T STEAL ANYTHING).

Obviously you haven't met Kiwi in Shining Force 2.

"Kiwi starts as probably the weakest character in the force, with low HP, low attack and low speed. It is difficult to level him, especially since spell casters can often instantly kill him even with weak spells. Even post promotion, his HP growth is the lowest of the Force.
Despite being able to take the most damage of any character, it is not a good idea to let enemies gang up on him early on because of his low HP so avoid situations where he is left alone."

Also his equipment options are extremely limited (as part of the game design, but still,) and he has no skills unless you count randomly breathing fire.
