If a friend of yours said they'd be willing to try one and after you had a long day at work, you were looking forward to sharing the game (only for an hour-ish), how would you feel if despite your best attempts to make it enjoyable, half way through your friend just gives up and intentionally dies to end the game ASAP and proceeds to say the game was trash AF ("messy like a teenaged boy's bedroom")?

And how would you feel if other supposed friends started ganging up on you to back your "friend" and reaffirm your game is trash AF?

And how would you feel if the next day, they tried to gaslight you about having never said any of the things they said and doubling down on the fact that the disagreement was about the SUBJECTIVE ART STYLE that they didn't like, which obviously you can't be mad at them for because it's subjective?

What would you do about the relationship(s)? Ignore it and pretend like nothing happened? Move on and don't bother trying to share anything with them anymore? Ask your therapist to move up your weekly appointment because you don't want to dwell on this for days though there really isn't time because there's constant deadlines at work and your boss won't hire another employee despite it being months of being understaffed? Discard the whole group?

Maybe they just didn't like the game and meant no disrespect. Give it another chance and if your friends begin to routinely make u feel bad maybe find different friends with more similar interests to share games with.

it's very important to know what game are we talking about?

I'm able to enjoy things without needing other people's approval or affirmation to shore up my own enjoyment, so this wouldn't bother me in the slightest.

I would fully expect someone to hate any of my favorite games after only spending an hour with them.

I would kill them all, and bury their bodies in shallow graves down near the train tracks.

I just wouldn't play the game with them again. I'd leave them to their opinion and move on from the subject.

Dota is a really hard game to get into. It be like that.

This happens with me and one of my closest friends. He pretty much just plays GTA, COD, NBA, Madden, etc. I try to play games he likes with him and I'm falling asleep. I show him games I like and he shits on them. In the end we just have a good laugh and move on.

Assuming I did have people I'd show my video games to...
I'd ask what they thought about the story/gameplay up to the point they quit. I have plenty of other games to show them.

Pretty much. Differences of opinions are normal, and many games do require more investment than some people are willing to put into them before they become really enjoyable by any metric (DotA is very much one of them, if that's the one you're talking about). If your friends are outright harassing and belittling you for your tastes, that's another issue and those might not be people you should be subjecting yourself to (same with lying about their opinions after the fact), but there's nothing wrong with friends not liking the games you like.

Some people are much more willing to play things that they dont necessarily enjoy in order to spend time with other people.

One unexpected reason this is tough is because they think differently than you on playing a game. The more willing will expect others to make similar sacrifices to play together, while others dont expect anything. This also means that a person that doesnt sacrifice for the sake of social interaction will not think of the fact that you may have sacrificed. They say things like "I didnt ask you or make you play with us." because they dont feel that social pressure you feel.

So its best to move on, share a little, but be ready for them to quit. Also, if you are doing something to be part of the group know that they wont do it themselves.

In regards to trashing the game Id say its probably just shit talking. And that hyperbole is more entertaining than being reserved. So aggressive shit should be taken with a grain of salt.

lol first 22 years of my life were spent in different ghettoes across Illinois, Cali and Missouri, where you can and will be socially imprisoned for liking anything other than football, basketball, wrestling, racing games, mainstream shooters... and you get a limited amount of fighters you can play (basically just MK and Tekken) before you're eternally banished to being weird/corny... so I'm well past desensitized to having people hate on shit I like.

if im being honest im very easy to gaslight so id probably just go along with it and start hating my favorite game too. i would also start calling everything i didnt like messy like a teenaged boy's bedroom. eg. wow my mind is messy like a teenaged boy's bedroom
