Just beat it a few minutes ago. What a fantastic, beautiful game that was. I'm a huge fan of story games in general, and that was easily one of the best. I can't state enough just how superb it was across the board.

If anyone is interested in the game at all, or just enjoys visual novels, I'd give it the highest recommendation possible.

It's 99% novel, with a handful of choices across the game, and a few endings stemming from them.

Definitely almost entirely novel.

Ive heard great things and am looking forward to playing it. From the little Ive gathered it seems like its more of a character driven VN than a plot driven one, is that the case? I prefer the latter, especially if theres a mystery element, but definitely plan to check it out regardless.

I'd say both, honestly? I was extremely invested in both the characters and the overarching plot.

There are a lot of bigger mysteries to the game, especially if you go in as blind as possible. I wouldn't look anything up about it, because the game leaves you to figure a lot out, and there are some very satisfying mysteries throughout.

Ah good to know, sounds like its the best of both worlds! Definitely trying to go in as blind as possible, made that mistake with Higurashi just by casually browsing the VN subreddit haha

Not going to link a ton of songs, but the OST is top tier as well.

I was hoping that there'd be more interest or people who had played it and wanted to discuss it, but I guess it's a bit too niche. Still highly recommend for anyone interested.

I've looked up the best Switch games on Metacritic a couple of times and always saw it like Top 5 which is crazy. I always thought it was weird to see it up with BotW and Odyssey lol. I like VNs though (especially Phoenix Wright/Zero Escape/games made from the same creator) and have been interested in stuff like Danganronpa. Seems interesting.

Yeah, sadly, the high scores are a bit misleading just because of the low sample size. With that said, most people who play it love it, and I can definitely vouch that it deserves the scores it gets. It really is fantastic, and it deserves more recognition for sure.

(FWIW, if you love ZE/AA, you'll likely love this as well, though it's more about reading than those. Still very good payoff for it.)

Yeah, for sure. There were some moments that downright hurt and where I had to take small breaks. Notably...

(Major, major spoilers ahead)

Pauline's death even though I figured out that it was her in advance, and her pleading with Yukimasa to recognize her as he stabbed her to death. A lot of the Yukimasa stuff with him forcing Giselle to cook the corpses that he killed was gnarly as well.

Giselle revealing what happened to her to get kicked out of the Bollinger estate.

The reveal that Didier killed Michel, and the later reveal that he was crying under his helmet.

Michel having to watch himself be crucified, seeing the body that he was ashamed of on display for everyone, and finally seeing his mother disown him after his death.

And pretty much everything involving Michel's backstory, especially the Aimee stuff.

The game had some downright brutal moments in it, either from the super emotional parts or just parts where the game goes where you wouldn't expect it to.

Yeah, for sure. I was REALLY worried that the game would fumble the ending, with the "Michel can change the past and prevent all of the tragedies!" stuff near the end, but I think it ended on the perfect note that felt well-earned given the rest of the game.

My only minor complaint about it is that I was hoping to see Javi again, since the game sort of just forgot about him. He was ultimately dragged into the tragedy by losing his parents and his sister figure to Yukimasa and seeking some fairly justified revenge, then died for it. I was hoping that he'd get something at the end just because there wasn't really a reason for his soul to be punished along with everyone else's, but the game sort of forgot about him after the second door. It's not a big deal, though, just something that I was hoping to see.

I finished The House in Fata Morgana back in 2020. It's a fantastic game and one I recommend to anyone who likes a well written and emotional story. My only complaint is that the start is a bit slow but once the story gets going, you're in for something truly special. It also has a superb art style and a phenomenal soundtrack.

I am super happy to own the limited edition with the soundtrack, poster, and art book. It's nice.

I'd honestly consider rebuying it physically if it was in stock for reasonable amounts, but as far as I can tell, it's sold out or has its price jacked up everywhere.

I got it on Steam on sale, along with Requiem (which I haven't gotten to since my net has been awful for almost a month, what a lovely ISP I have), but sadly Reincarnation isn't available on Steam and I do kind of want to play that as well, and I believe that it's included with the physical editions on consoles. If nothing else, I guess I might end up watching a LP of it, but it's not quite the same, and I'm not positive if I'm willing to drop $40~ to just get it digitally again on consoles strictly for Reincarnation.

Yeah, I was extremely lucky when I bought the limited edition. It was cheap at the time compared to the current prices. Requiem is amazing. It greatly elevates some of the characters. You'll get a lot of enjoyment out of it when you do get to it. Reincarnation, while good and entertaining, definitely isn't worth dropping $40 on. I wasn't a fan of the art style change personally. It's probably fine to watch on YouTube. You won't be missing much in comparison to watching a LP of the main story or Requiem.

Requiem and Reincarnation are pretty lengthy. You are about to experience a lot more content and story than you would initially expect. I wish I could go through both blind again.

I do own Requiem, at least (which is on Steam/I also bought on sale at the same time as the main game). If it comes down to it, I might just YT Reincarnation, unless the PS4/Switch versions go on sale or I can find the physical version randomly.

I enjoyed it overall, but it was so damn dreary that I procrastinated on finishing it for a few months. I love dark themes, but this was a bit hard for me to get excited about. After finishing the game, I started doing the prologue story but after an hour or so it started feeling kinda pointless. Do I really need to watch Morgana suffer some more? Do I need to see the specifics of how the revolt happened, when I already know how things turned out in the end?

I'm curious what CE thinks about the prologue and bonus stories. Would they be worth reading?

Also, did anyone notice that hidden text in the backlog at one point?

Spoilers: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1135250467

I happened across it by sheer coincidence while trying to reread something I'd absentmindedly skimmed over. That snippet "It will all come back to you eventually. And then I'll be there with you again, my dear... whispering into your ear for centuries to come. And this time, I will not fail... I'll mold your soul into the same shape as mine." gave me chills, and I thought it was maybe some text that would come up later in the game. I was waiting for the moment where those hidden messages would come into play in some form, but it never came, which was kinda sad because honestly that was one of the few things that kept me playing when I started losing interest.

I caught those as I was playing, and thought it was really cool.

The reason for them being there is just kind of something that the game leaves you to piece together: They're conversations between Michel & Morgana as he figures out that the story he's being told is total bullshit, and it's intended as an early hint that Door 4 is all lies. In the context of the plot as a whole, Morgana was trying to steer Michel away from reuniting with the (real) Giselle and from having both of them reclaim their true selves, because she had an affinity for him and wanted him to become more like her by cursing his family and staying in the mansion with her. Her primary goal at that point was likely to get Michel to accept that story, give up digging deeper, and stay in the mansion as Giselle remains The Maid.

It was neat, and I did kind of wish that the game did more with that, but it's understandable why it's only there within the context of the game.

Started Requiem. I was going to wait for a bit longer, but I really wanted more FM, so I jumped in.

(Spoilers for FM's main game & the opening of Requiem)

That shot of Morgana covered in gashes from the blood feast at the beginning was fucking gnarly. The game just goes from 0 to 10 almost right out of the gate, eesh.

Also seems like Jacopo is the main character of this? That's fitting if so, he was pretty intimately involved with that storyline. I'm interested in how this changes my opinion of him, because I had a lot of mixed feelings about Jacopo by the end of the main game - I really liked him, and he was my favorite of the three men, but he made some absolutely massive mistakes that were really hard to overlook, so I'd be interested to get a bit more of his perspective.

Didn't get too far into Requiem just yet, but it's interesting already. I'm really interested to see the missing pieces from this storyline, like the fates of characters that weren't quite elaborated on in the original, namely Maria, and to see where the new characters go.

I suppose I'll make this a soft Requiem for Innocence playthrough thread since I'm a decent ways in.

Major spoilers for the first half-ish of Requiem or so as well as the main game:

Jacopo's talks about showing Morgana the world and how she'll never have to endure that nightmare again are absolutely brutal given what I know of her fate from the main game.

And on that note, Ceren's death was gnarly as well. For a fairly likable, if a bit over-the-top, side character, she got it really bad. I honestly felt awful for her. I was just starting to really like her when she disappeared, too, and then...well...

Also, I think I'm fairly far into Requiem at this point, and I'm really liking it. Heavy spoilers again, but if anyone is interested in how that's going:

Gratien's betrayal & death was brutal, even if I kind of expected it. Jacopo's story in the original mentioned that a meeting with an old friend ended with an attempt on his life, and it had to be Gratien from what I know of the entire plotline. I couldn't imagine him surviving after that either, but it still hurt. I liked him a lot, so seeing him fall as far as just sheer jealousy over who took the throne and betray Jacopo over that before dying was harsh.

Odilon's death was a bummer too. I was starting to really like him a lot, and then...well, he got rock'd. Not the most important character ever, but he was shockingly likable for what he was.

Jacopo's fall from grace is really hard to see play out. I liked him in the main game, and he's only gotten way better in the side story, so seeing him gradually go mad is rough. I think he's second to Michel for me for the entire storyline by now. I don't see anyone passing Michel, though, because he was just a superb main character.

I'm also liking Maria so much in this one, it's kind of shocking since I really disliked her in the main game due to the third door (though her role in the final door was great in that, even if she wasn't around THAT much in it). I don't really know how her fate is going to turn out, since there weren't really any hints about that from the original game, but I have a bad feeling that it's going to go south since this storyline is so heavy on the tragedy.

From my understanding:

The Steam version is cheaper and goes on sale, but there's one side story that isn't available on Steam at all. However, it's apparently the worst one by far and doesn't seem super essential, so if you're fine skipping that or watching it in video form, you can get both FM and the good side story on a Steam sale for really cheap. I got the base game on sale for $12.49 on Steam, while the package is $40 on console and doesn't go on sale.

The console version comes with both side stories, but it's pricier and I've never seen it go on sale a single time despite watching for it.

Personally, if you're just curious about grabbing the main game, I'd get it on a Steam sale for much cheaper. If you think you might want all three stories, one of them isn't on Steam at all, so it might be worth getting the pricier console version in that case.

It probably crushed me worse than the main game did at points, and I'm really glad that it exists, because it adds so much context and characterization for characters that needed it. Highly, highly recommend that, in addition to the base game. (Though obviously if anyone hasn't gotten the base game, I'd wait to play that before buying the side story, as the side story spoils a lot of big things from the base game as well)

I was going to let this thread die, but if anyone is interested in this, it's on sale for $12.49 on Steam right now. If anyone who mentioned being intrigued by the game wants to hop onto it, that's a fantastic price for it.

Heard good things about it, so I bought it a few months ago when it was on sale, and after finishing Higurashi the other day, I was debating between this, Umineko, or Kara no Shoujo next, but I think I'm gonna go with Umineko.

Still, I look forward to whenever I do start playing it.

Totally fair. Hopefully you enjoy it when you do play it, though.

I've never really heard of this. I'm a fan of good visual novels etc, but I only ever saw it in a sale listen and kinda just skipped over it without really looking at it. What other stories/visual novels would you compare it to? I haven't read anything too niche, but some of the ones I liked were Higurashi/Umineko, Zero Escape, Steins;Gate etc

In terms of gameplay, Steins;Gate is probably the closest. (Or Umineko, but I've never played that one) FM is pretty much pure novel with a few choices here and there.

For the story and setting, it's a bit different than these, but tonally probably closest to SG as well. It takes itself very seriously and is really mature about its themes. There's not a lot of silly anime humor or anything and it doesn't really go off the rails with goofy sci-fi stuff like ZE can at times. It's a gothic mystery with heavy romance elements that are surprisingly well-written, and some horror elements. That's roughly the most that I can say without heavily spoiling it.

I will say that, as someone who really likes VNs, Fata Morgana stood near the very top for me, and that's an opinion that I hear quite a bit.

Bought it yesterday because of this topic, just reached the second door and I'm intrigued. Looking forward to the rest.

I'm going in completely blind and plan to keep it that way, but I am a bit curious how this game handles endings. Is there anything I should be aware of in order to get some "true" ending? I am making multiple saves so I can go back and pick some different options if needed.
