While the majority of the world is putting in strong restrictions after the omicron wave, the United States is going a different route after President Joe Biden released a televised message to vaccinated americans that they can gather safely for the holidays and Trudeau SLAMMED the president on that message!!.

The Prime Mnister, cabinet ministers and top health officials urged canadians to limit family and friends gathering for the holidays to control the spread and to ease the burden on front line healthcare workers

2 federal ministers pointed out that Canada has a lower covid-19 death rate than the US and said the country is still hunkering down in the coming weks as it'll prove to be a difficult winter with the fast spreading virus.

Trudeau said he was taking precausions after 6 members of his staff and security tested positive and Canada's top doctor Theresa Tam is urging people to keep gatherings small as possible

But Biden says americans can celebrate safely, particularly those vaccinated even though there are thousands of breakthrough cases but because early data shows that the virus is not as deadly as Delta, they are pushing through with large gatherings in a bid to return to normal but warns those unvaccinated they are risking their lives

Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland said Canada has the second lowest mortality rate from among the G7 countries because of its strict lockdown orders and high vaccination rate as they do not want to take any risks of any overloaded hospitals since the start of the pandemic

The Liberals and NDP have banned their members from travelling for the holidays but Conservative leader Erin O'Toole says his party members can travel freely to anywhere they desire because he does not believe in punishing vaccinated people from their freedoms

Who cares what Trudeau thinks, even Canadians have no respect for him.

If it was a certain someone they would agree

Any leader who is going to tell people they can't see their own families for a holiday is doomed to lose the argument regardless of any other factors involved. Simple fact is that, if it's a choice between getting to meet your family for a special day and the virus, most people will opt for the virus so they can meet mom and dad again to swap presents.

Hawt.

Eh, different countries different rules. There is no way Biden could ever lock people down for the virus anyways. It was unpopular even during the OG corona, but people were willing to roll with it for a short amount of time, now no one cares, especially with Omicron strain being pretty weak.

As much as people want to believe this, the most optimistic data so far suggests a 29% lower hospitalization rate than other variants, and those are very preliminary studies with a lot of caveats attached to them because of the methodological limitations. Some other studies are suggesting little to no difference, and others still suggesting the rate might even be higher for Omicron (though with similar limitations). If that optimistic data proves accurate, that's a significant reduction, but it's not like the disease has become harmless, and that reduction could very easily be nullified by an increase in case numbers (specifically, a ~40% increase).

People have really latched on to "It's a milder illness!" because it's so nice to have a glimmer of hope after so long, but things are going to get quite a bit worse if that hope isn't tempered with an appropriate degree of caution.

All signs point to it being incredibly weak. There has only been one reported death in the US from Omnicron (from an unvaccinated person I might add) & only a handful around the world. The symptoms are much closer to a common cold (tiredness, cough, fatigue, ect) than the traditional covid and in places that have had massive outbreaks of the strain, such as South Africa have seen a significant decrease in hospitalizations to reported Covid infections. If anything, the strain is so weak it is distorting the data from more deadly strains by making the Covid death rate drop through the floor. Not saying you can't get unlucky and die from it, but nothing that is worth shutting down people's lives for.

It's been less than a month since the variant was first identified. That's not enough time to conclude anything remotely definite about a disease where severe cases can last for longer than that, and certainly not anything definite enough to ignore the extent to which case numbers are exploding. There's a pretty good chance that it will turn out to be significantly milder once the dust settles, but that has yet to be quantified and erring on the side of caution in the mean time is overwhelmingly the better idea for the sake of not killing a bunch of people unnecessarily.
