So yeah, I feel like playing a Final Fantasy game.

I excluded Final Fantasy I & II because they're entirely too dated.

I excluded Final Fantasy IV, VI, VIII, & X because I've beaten them already and don't feel like revisiting them.

And I'm not playing the MMOs.

So which one should I play around with?

All except Typo

V and IX should be top priorities! Also consider Tactics.

Everything post-X is pretty divisive *shrug*

I don't feel like a tactical game, which is why I'm not doing Tactics!

And I'm not including FF7 because I'm like, very close to finishing up FF7 Remake with the girlfriend, so I'm not looking to play more FF7 universe now.

If I and II feel too dated for you, III will be no better.

My vote is V.

Havent played XV or Type, but havent heard much great about them. III and XII are awful. Of the rest Id go XIII > IX >= V probably, but you could go with IX or V as theyre the least disliked of the games you listed.

5 and 9 are all-timers.

Now that we finally have a decent version of III in the pixel remaster it may be worth playing, but I haven't played that version myself.

XIII and XV are both good games. Haven't played the others.

My brother has said that FF5 aged beautifully.

At thanksgiving he gave it very high praise.

I found Bravely Default extremely slow to play. I didn't love it, unfortunately.

Can't go wrong with V or IX.

I'd joke about the mega-free-trial to XIV but the game's so popular you can't even buy it right now due to server loads, so...

IX > XV > III > XII > Type-0 > V >> Games that are just good but not great > OK games >>>>>>> Awful games>>Sonic 06 >> FXIII > Games that you cant play because they are not finished.

So go with 9, but as long as you stay away from 13 you dont have to worry. 13-2 is actually a MUCH better game.

Type-0 is a pretty cool game, actually. Of course, it's not among the very best FFs, but it's a complementary title, not a main one. I don't get the hate. Certainly beats a bunch of mainline ones like VIII and XIII.

5 is my favorite, but XIV's a single player story with an MMO community. I'd still recommend it, once the servers reopen to newbies, but it is a time commitment for the worst part of the game (the start)

12 and 13 are my favourites out of that lot but I'm in a minority there. I'd say go for 9

Absolutely the worst game on this list.

Also I voted for 9 but also wanted to vote for 5.

You say "play around with" which seems to imply you want to play around with a battle system, 'cause it's kind of hard to do that with an FF story. So go with FF5. Or FF3 if you have time to play that, too.

I've been playing universally acclaimed story driven single player FFXIV for awhile and completely love it.

Picked V because FFMC has me really appreciate Ahead On Our Way

I like IX more, but I also support an V choice, since its kinda key to the 16bit experience.

9 > 12 > 5 > 15

i havent played 3 so no comment on it. avoid 13 and type0

They're 2 of the only actually good ones on the list. The 12 rerelease is also good (PS2 version was not) but a lot of people haven't played it still because they are biased because of having played the original. But I'd still say 5 and 9 are better anyway.

3 is meh, 13 and 15 suck, Type-0 I haven't played.

XV > XIII > T0 > XII (zodiac age) > V > III > XII (vanilla) > IX

Also yeah III is just as dated as I and II

Up to V are good games, III is meh, orginal XII and IX are buns

4-10 are the popular years and those are the only two of those era you included

I haven't played 3, but if you want something straightforward, cute, and grindy I'd go for 5 or 3. I think they're the two more about the job system

9 is a little frustrating, and the PC version has some controller issues, but the game is enjoyable with the fast forward button and ability to skip battle intros

For 12... you really have to be into the combat system and programming your teammates. You can see mmo mechanics bleeding in. Kind of a slow burn, but at least the dialogue and world building is coherent

15, again, you have to really enjoy wandering around, grinding, collecting stuff, cooking, and so on. I never finished it

13 is just awful in every way

So I'd say 5, 9, or 12 depending on your mood, but none are as good as the ones you've already played

the main thing that made 13 bad was it took 80% of the game introducing all the battle mechanics to you, and 13-2 lets you fly with em all right out the gate

there were a LOT more things that made 13 bad than those two
The linearity and gameplay things don't even bother me that much.

13-2 borderline top 5 Final Fantasy game oh ya

13 is not a bad game.

13-2 ruined it though. The story should have ended with 13. No sequels.

12 is also severely under rated. The zodiac age remaster made it a lot more fun.

From a single player narrative standpoint, XIV is unironically the best game in the franchise by a significant amount. It's really not close.

However, it's so popular and beloved at this point that they've had to take the game off sale because it literally can't handle how many people are trying to play it, so nothing doing!

Tactics would be the next best, also not on your list. Then VI, also not on your list.

So I'm going to have to go with V.

6 is my favorite, for what it's worth. Followed by 10.

9's remaster has a triple speed option that can be handy for battles, but annoyingly you have to pause the game to switch the setting on and off each time (at least on Switch).
