Like the game evolved too much for a console but continued as a PC game?

Not sure but there are games that were far better on PC than they were on consoles.

Team Fortress

Portal

Minecraft

Grand Theft Auto

The Witcher 3

Skyrim

Counter Strike

Battlefield

Dragon Age

you could make the argument that diablo did for a while since diablo 1 came out on the ps1, and didn't return to consoles until 3

Sorry, I meant as stand alone games, not a franchise or series.

Pretty much any game with an active modding scene ends up becoming a much better experience on PC than on consoles, but I don't know if you'd count that. I know some people get butthurt when you say that mods make the PC version of the game better than the console version, which I've never really understood. They're not officially part of the game, of course, but they are a part of the end user experience, which is all that really matters for determining how enjoyable a game is.

Not in the least. Theres plenty of games that are on consoles and PC and it it often limited to to capabilities of the console counter parts. So I am wondering if there is a game that just dropped the Console aspect of their offering all together.

Hasn't MS been allowing mods on Xbox games?

Both PS and Xbox lets you have mods for Bethesda games and that's only because bethesda themself put in the effort to include it, it's not like you can go to nexusmods and download stuff for Xbox, and it was a huge PITA for modders to get certain mods on console.

I've yet to see any other game have mods for console versions, and again, even the mods that do get to these versions are painfully lacking.

As for the main Topic, does Team Fortress 2 count? it's been availible on Console since it released but it never recived any content updates like PC did, it's still (almost)release day TF2.

Yeah, Morrowind. I mean who plays plain, unmodified Morrowind anymore. It is almost an entirely different game on PC.

MMOs have done this. FF11 and DCUO are, I think, no longer playable on the PS2/3.

I think that's got to be one of the most striking examples. Modern TF2 is barely recognizable compared to what the game looked like at launch, and that is actually a result of official updates and not just mod support.

Phantasy Star Online

it was originally for Dreamcast, Gamecube and Xbox, then SEGA released PSO Blue Burst which exceeded all of console's content.

I feel like that's more a case of an enhanced PC port than a matter of a PC version developing beyond the others, given that it was a separate release.

All the Elder Scrolls games are better on PC, in my opinion. The Fallout games are the same way. I dont know how the mod community is on the console versions, but its huge on PC. The community is pretty good at bug fixes.

Final Fantasy XI might be a similar case?

It started off as PS2 and PC, but they grew the PC version out much longer than the console releases.

Payday 2. Something about the engine meant that porting between platforms wasn't possible, so when they resumed updates they just left consoles behind to better focus their resources.

This shouldn't be an issue for Payday 3 when it finally comes out.

They did this about 3 times, eventually they released all the DLC up till a certain point and then never updated the 360/PS3 version, then they had the Xbox/PS4 ver. with more DLC, then they released more after a few years and then stopped again.

Also when people were complaing about the fact the console versions never got updates one of the developers(Almir I think) litterally started insulting console players for not owning a PC to play the "superior" version, but nobody really cared. Overkill is a horrible company imo.

I dont think In base game terms but in terms of mods then yes.

some PC games have mods that are so Expansive than can add quests new locations characters etc. and change the game to such an extent that you are playing a totally new game.

I don't think they'd count for this specific question, but they absolutely should be counted in answering the question of "which version is better?". Whether the game was designed around modding or not (and many actually are, which makes the comparison trickier), modding is a part of the end user experience, which is ultimately the only thing that needs to be considered when comparing how good different versions are. All other things being equal, a version of the game with mods available is going to be better than a version without.
