I am not some sort of coroorate bootlicker but a lot of posts i see there give me yikes or cringe vibes. There is a discussion to be had about higher wages and worker rights but i feel like some people on that sub just want to be lazy yet get all the benefits as if they were a hard working, useful member of the team.

This thread is filled with cringe.

Peasants may have had more "vacation time" but didnt live long lives or have many rights...but they had more days off!!!!

There's a fine line between being rightfully opposed to so much of American work culture (especially at the corporate level) and seeing that opposition as validating laziness (pretending for a moment that the concept of laziness exists in the colloquial sense and that avolition can't usually be explained by an undiagnosed/untreated mental health issue). It's not surprising that a subreddit dedicated to the former would end up attracting a lot of the latter, given how Reddit has a tendency to radicalize its communities thanks to its echo chamber design.

Imagine how many hours of work hunters and gatherers put in. 40 hours a week is easy.

That's 128 hours a week to do what you want. Manage your time better.

r/antiwork has a good idea but the wrong message. There are people in that subreddit that actually are anti work and quite literally want to get rid of having to work. Until we can fully automate pretty much all aspects of life that will not happen, and by then we will have reached some sort of singularity where we are all sucked into a VR universe.

The good part of that subreddit is when employers are outed by employees who are truly being mistreated. But that's not very common. A lot of the posts are unfortunately bums who just dislike their job and want to have a reason to complain. Or obviously fake posts.

they also raid other subs / posts. like there was an invention to improve work efficiency, or maybe some person found a smarter, better way to do something. then antiworkers raided and spammed that post, something about exploiting workers or some shit. their argument is basically like "look at this fucker who fucking loves to work. fucking dirty capitalist. making it easier for workers to do their job. how evil."

reddit in a walnut shell

Regardless of the sub though I don't like the assertion that people are "lazy" for not wanting to work. Like 99.99% of people only work because they have to, let's be real. It's an artificial human construct, it's not natural to want to work - though yeah, a lot of things that aren't "natural" that we do are good. But you can't tell me that even if you "enjoy" work you wouldn't rather be doing something else with your life most of the time.

I get it also that we need some way of establishing order, and we aren't close to fully automating, but it's fucked up that with how technology is advancing people have a harder time affording things and the wealth disparity gets bigger. When people get fed up with that they crave the kind of shit that antiwork provides, and people on reddit are dumb and don't have a good eye for when something is fake

I feel like it's important to have humans do things, otherwise they just have a bad time. Sitting around all day every day leads to... emotionally unhealthy people. Doing something menial and getting praise out of it is kind of a good setup for people.

People would do more stuff if they weren't working/worried about having enough money/both. Working drains you and doesn't give you enough unbroken time to get into stuff. Not working doesn't give you enough money to do anything cool.

My SO needs something fairly simple to do with an exercise component along with an individual focus so she can excel at her job and feel good about it.
I know this because she talks about how much she liked one factory job vs another.

First, far, far less than you're probably assuming -- probably not even 20 hours a week. Second, although they didn't work much, their quality of life was also low -- although not as low as early farmers who also worked, much, much harder.

Medieval Peasants also worked ridiculous hours for their lord and were force indoctrinated into religion. I also generally do not like the crappy attitude "Europeans are better than Americans", stuff. I am pretty sure Europe doesn't even have a tech sector. It's just gross generalization that every American is a UPS / Amazon worker or something.

And yes, people are lazy, especially unskilled ones. People who learn a skill or a trade (you can be a high school drop out and learn a trade) and actually use that trade are being rewarded? Who the fuck knew.

reddit is a website for very stupid people. i would definitely cover for somebody who took a 90 minute nap at work though, that sounds awesome. idk why some people agree that work is exploitative but then think its 'cringe' to exploit it back. if i could find a way to do no work and make my boss hate me but still get paid i would absolutely do it with no guilt whatsoever

That sub got sorta big sorta quickly, and it very quickly went to their heads. Some of them seriously think they're a national union that can organize effective demonstrations. They actually called for McDonalds boycotts (worker and customer) until they offered $25/hr starting pay; two weeks later that's going about as well as you can imagine.

They need to stick to exposing bad work culture and empowering the individual, not trying to be an organization or movement.
