Are you still wearing clothes and shoes that are 3+ years old?

according to statistics, people ought to be buying new clothes every year and shoes every 2 years on average and not to be wearing outdated clothing past 3 years...but are you still wearing clothing passed that expiry date?.

I don't buy new clothing if my old ones are still wearable. I have too many, and buying new ones is often a waste of time, money, and space.

I wear my clothes to the point when they start disintegrating, and only buy new stuff when I need it. I literally have clothes that are from high school that I still wear.

Although, with shoes I usually keep a good pair (going out in public), and a "work" pair (yard work, walking, etc.). I replace the good pair about once every 2-3 years and make the old ones my new "work" pair.

More like 30+ but yeah.

More info.

I have dress shoes I only wear very very rarely (few times a year), they are from before I got married (wore them while getting married), so about 30 years old or so. Same for all my jeans as I never wear them. I have like 10 of them, and they just sit there only to be used once in a blue moon.

My sweat pants have deteriorated so I only have about half, but they are also well over 20 years old, and now I only have like 10 left without holes in them etc (that I threw out).

Meanwhile I have 256 million t-shirts, about half of which have eventually gotten holes etc and got thrown out. Not all are 30 years old, as my wife bought them for me over our 20 years of marriage (from over 5 years ago now and before). I still have many that are pretty much brand new after all that time though. I generally just use about 20 total and the rest sit on a shelf, for when my current 20 wear out.

Finally I have dress shirts, all from eons ago, I generally only wear 3-4 of the 10 or so I have, and then I just wear them for an interview etc. All look fine, no holes, all are very old.

I do get new tennis shoes every 3-5 years though, my current pair was actually my grandfathers before he passed about 2 years ago now. I'll probably replace them in a year or two. Those are the shoes I generally wear when I go out.

How are you guys getting 3+ years out of a pair of shoes? I buy decent shoes and they're usually falling apart after a year and a half. I don't even wear them to work as my job requires safety footwear.

not trying to be sarcastic, but maybe buy better shoes? I had 5+ year old nike walking shoes, and I replaced them with some cheap Walmart brand shoes. a year or so later I put on my "garbage" old nikes to mow the lawn with and realized they were infinitely more comfortable and snug than my "new" cheap shoes. almost immediately got some new nikes which are not even that much more expensive.

(though I do notice the nike "air" part seems to make them particularly squeeky shoes after a fairly short time.)

This is a baffling terrible sentence.

Some of it certainly is, even without the pandemic driving part of it.

In the case of shoes, if they're good quality, you take care of them, and they aren't being exposed to strenuous activity, they can last decades or longer. And that's not even counting ones reserved for special occasions.

Plus I imagine most people have at least belt that's 5+ years old, and if they own hats they're likely old as well. And then there are jackets. It'd be weird if somebody *didn't* have at least one jacket for over a decade, unless they're young or something. And don't get me started on ties. I say, don't get me started on ties. (But if you did, I'd point out that some of those can be around forever, and even inherited. Unlike belts and jackets, ties are often one-size-fits-all.)

And even taking stuff like shoes, belts, and jackets off the table, almost everybody is going to own at least some garments that are 3+ years old because you aren't going to replace everything on a schedule.

trodi_911 posted...

There is a thriving second-hand clothes industry so a lot of second-hand clothes do get used, even if not everything does.

...and it seems unlikely that they'd wind up in foreign landfills when it's cheaper to use ones within the same country.

Shoes do, sneakers often don't. However, it comes down to the usage. A good pair of dress shoes can last practically forever with proper maintenance and care. Even without maintenance and care, you could be looking at 5-10 years.

When you walk as much as I do you tend to wear out shoes pretty quickly, so I don't have any shoes that last over 3 years (except dress shoes which I wear like once a year at most). The boots I wear to work and around town I bought in September of last year. The Western boots I wear around the barn are almost 2 years old, but the soles are pretty well worn.

I buy new clothes every year or so, but they goes into the rotation with my other clothes and since I have enough to wear a fresh shirt every day for over a month, they wear out very slowly. Clothes that have become too worn, develop holes, or become stained go into my barn clothes rotation. I have polo shirts that are over 20 years old that I still wear when I'm working with my animals.

My shoes are younger than 3 years but not by much. Some of my clothes are 3 years old though and yes I still wear them. If there is nothing wrong with the clothes or shoes I see no reason to not wear them. I'm also a creature of habit. I have certain outfits for certain things and very rarely change it up. Needless to say I've not bought new clothing or had clothes bought for me in a while.

Overlooking that you can re-sole shoes and there are professionals who offer those services, you can also rotate your shoes. I had a coworker who would alternate between 5-6 pairs of shoes.

I don't think at all 3+ year old clothes are out of date. Not even 10+ year old clothes are imho. If its good, fine, comfortable, not broken and you don't feel bad wearing them, why to bother at all. What is out of date clothing? What I feel is that it is a stupid consideration to have in life at all buying clothes because of fashion or because of feeling wearing outdated stuff. I have more important stuff to think and do than caring about fashion.
