The update, by my count, has 101 songs with two noms or more. How would tie-breakers work to decide what gets in if there are eventually more than 128 with two?

I've been thinking about this myself, so far I'm not sure what to do in a tie situation. Well, the first thing would probably be to prioritise number of unique user votes (so those with doubles would go out first), after that... other than a randomised selection or somehow having a runoff vote I'm not sure. It'd depend on if we're talking about cutting 1-2 or picking 5 from 50 or something, no way to know until it happens. I am very open to suggestions on this!

I tried looking at VGMC noms on the archives just now and I didn't even begin to understand what the hell was going on lol. I'm sure many contests over the years here have come up with their own way of doing things, I'll have a proper look tomorrow.

personally i don't care at all either way, so if either barreldragon or HasteDeux wouldn't mind consolidating, that would be ideal

@barreldragon88 I'm only interested in the SNES version of this. If you're determined to stick with the DS version, you'll have to get it in without my support. But if you don't mind doing the SNES version, well, you have the option to switch and consolidate!

may be a bad idea to have a contest that'd run (figuratively) into the next vgmc

also kinda silly in principle to have a contest the size of vgmc for one specific series that's 95% vgmc legal anyway

and very foolish to promote many matches per day when there will already be a high rate of uneven familiarity and bias that may already encourage people to not listen to the songs before voting

Thanks, barrel! I'm just really biased toward the original FFIV "soundfont"... it just sounds so good to me (to some people that is CRAZY), while certain other versions sound off. Except that DS version sounds better than normal to me today... okay, fine, I could back the DS version!

After going through more nominations... wow @ FFX and FFXIII-2! I played FFX years ago, but I forgot almost all the music, or rather, I didn't have the same musical appreciation back then. If we have another BOST, those two are two good choices, except trying to create my ideal FFX Hamauzu-heavy setlist would probably cause a lot of backlash, so maybe FFXIII-2 would be the better option...

Support:
9) Limit Break (FFXIII-2)
10) World's Collide (FFXIII-2)
11) Beyond the Darkness (FFX)

NFUN is magical! He knew I was considering Beyond the Darkness aka At the End of the Abyss. I'll just use the former title because that's how it's listed in the nomination list.

I would also suggest no bigger than 128. The sheer length of a 256-track contest would make it hard to keep people interested the whole time.

X has a spectacular OST and I think XIII has a higher quantity of good tracks compared to XIII-2, but what I like doesn't seem to align too well with the board's tastes

I think this could be a mini-VGMC: 128 entrants, annual cadence, retiree system. Depends on TC's interest

Re: tiebreaker, maybe there's some kind of "play-in" round(s), but maybe also some kind of consolidation tiebreaker opportunity for song variations? Like if 3 noms is looking like the auto-entry line and 2 noms are tiebreaker territory, and we have some songs that are 1-1 (or 1-1-1 across 3 different versions) for noms, that could be an opportunity to consolidate and at least get one version of that song in, or to a tiebreaker stage rather than all of them missing the cut?

Though that does make things more complicated but if "version control" is an issue by the end it's an opportunity to get things narrowed...

Anyways, planning to listen to a shit-ton of tracks on Saturday while working so that'll help make my final decisions but might as well make a few I'm sure of in the meantime:

What's a "normal" contest? Is there a definition for that? Should we compare to official site contests, VGMC, or March Madness -- none of which are the same size? Unclear.

However, the subtext of your statement was that we should go as big as the series can support. That's what I was refuting. And I'm going to politely suggest that hashing out this topic in greater detail derails the topic and takes away from the good spirit of BFFMC, so unless it's really a fly in the ointment, we should probably just let andyIt run the contest according to their vision.

Aaaand up to date as of Martin's noms.

I'm not planning to push this any higher than 128. There's certainly enough great songs that you could theoretically go huge with this, but the problem is time and contest length more than anything! Someone down the line could make a contest in a different format that would support massive numbers (like UoTY style?), or you could run a small tournament for each game or something. But I'm just focusing on this for now, and 256 would probably be a bit much right now! Really happy there's been so much interest in this, though.

Yeah this is a good idea, really we'll have to see what the TB situation is like if there is one. The worst would be, like, having to cut 15 out of 50 or something.

it's really subjective as far as bracket size goes. personally for me, the set of 256 songs in a FF music contest would be better than a regular VGMC. this is because i really like FF music and VGMC actively forces putting in weaker songs with the top 200+ being ineligible at this point. and some people would agree with me on that, which at at least makes it a valid point to bring up. you don't know how many would agree on that until you ask, but 1024 is just a ridiculous strawman because no one would think that or ask for that.

man listening through all these sakimoto soundtracks in search of a song i remember that possibly does not exist has made me shift to an alignment where i think sakimoto's actually my favorite ff composer. i always liked him but would never point to his work on ff games for why. so thought i liked hamauzu&friends more within ff

i think a lot of his stuff is really full and reverb drenched in a way that makes the composition harder to hear (which is a fine style, mind you) but its often hard to hear just how cool the songs are unless you're listening intently, so just takes a while to grow on me

ff13-2 is still my favorite ff ost (and ffx and the 13s are still pretty close) but basically anything sakimoto is giving that one a run for its money. might wind up supporting a bunch of random ff12/fft noms i didn't know very well before this topic now

only like 6 FF songs retired...

and pj's logic works identically for supporting a bracket of 4 songs or one of 2048. it's not a strawman, it's just pointing out he's not actually making a coherent point
