Got to level 2, looked at the level up screen and noped right out of there... that is WAY too many stats.

joking aside, Level 2 witch, I thought maybe the basic fireball was kinda lame/par for the course but Lightning Tendril was pretty nifty...

However, it runs at like 8fps (this is my backup PC) so I'll have to, like, get back to it later.

Yea PoE is not a game to play on that laptop. I suggested Trails in the Sky because that runs on everything.

Lighting Tendrils is legit one of the worst skills in the game and is considered a noob trap.

Anyways; What skill is good for cool GWWWWAAAAAAAAPHICS AoE... I'm not sure if Shock Brand Inquisitor or Reave Flurry Champion is cooler

Storm Brand is a all around good Skill.
Champion is good with Cyclone, which you don't get until Level 28.

If you want massive AoE, there are a lot of options, but not one of those. Just keep on playing. Seems you like it.

I think they were deliberately trying to create the impression that the game is complex. There's ample demand out there for more complex ARPG's, especially after Diablo 3 eschewed the skill tree system, and PoE screams "look at me I'm complicated!" with its passive tree. In practice, the passive tree's complexity doesn't actually add much to the game (the vast majority of it consists of minor stat boosts on the way to keystones, which means it isn't nearly as complex as it looks and could be dramatically simplified without taking anything meaningful away from the game) and the real build flexibility comes from the skill gem system, but the complexity of gems isn't are readily apparent as the passive tree's is.

TL;DR: It's supposed to make the game inaccessible, for the sake of appealing to people that are tired of how many games compromise themselves for accessibility's sake.

The real issue with PoE is with its gearing system which just has way more complexity to it than the skill tree. The skill tree is really a solved problem these days because GGG doesn't make huge sweeping changes to it often.

The gearing system on the other hand has some pretty big issues and the community hasn't been very happy with it recently (over the past year or so).

But Lok won't run into this for a while so it's whatever. Better to learn the game and see if he enjoys it.

what class would you recommend for starting 'cuz i'm finding the early game to be very much a chore

you want skills that can hit multiple enemies at once. this includes gems with AOE tag, or shoots multiple projectiles at once and/or chains. additionally get some helpers like totem, minions.

melee, try duelist, use perforate skill. later also get the blood and sand aura to improve perforate.
bows, try ranger, use split arrow.
minions, try witch, use summon raging spirit and raise zombie.

I think this time around I'll try a Contagion+E build... maybe with sub skeletons, but more likely Carrion Golem.

New league won't start until the last week of October.
This really don't affect you all that much if you're just learning to play the game. You're probably going to want to reroll a few times. The only thing that happens at a league launch is that the current league ends and all of your progress transfers to standard. Rarely your passive tree will reset (but you still keep all of your skill points).

honestly just look up some starter build on the forums that's tagged as noob friendly or low cost and follow it exactly until you figure out what you're doing

poe is complex until it suddenly isn't anymore

big skill tree? depending on what skill you want to do, the general direction you're headed in is fixed anyways. tons of mods to choose from? you actually only care about a few way more than the others (flat life/ES, resistances, whatever scales your offense, etc). shit tons of loot? you come to learn in which situations anything good can even possibly drop (also get a loot filter)

Yea even that has huge issues. You could accidentally stumble upon one of Wrecker of Day's builds (He's not a bad guy, he just really doesn't play a lot of PoE), or ShakCentral's Vortex Occultist (which is just not good anymore TBH). But that might just be me being jaded. I didn't really start looking at the forums until recently (I've always scraped my builds off of poe.ninja and poebuilds before that).

But then again I suck. I decided to just not play Expedition and instead level Flicker to 95 in Standard. In a weekend. And then not touch the game after that.

thats why you don't pick weird shit and just pick something really popular and common for the league

or do like totems, minions, ed contagion, or cyclone or some shit that's always at least kinda ok
