What's usually more decent?

Not really counting awesome movies like Wreck-It Ralph or Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, since they are original stories directly contemplated for a film (and the latter is also based on a comic book, anyway). Also not counting awesome games like 007: Nightfire.

I'd go with movie-based videogames. I've played a good chunk that I've enjoyed a lot, like Spider-Man 2 and Harry Potter 1 & 3, and I've yet to see an inverted Goldeneye-esque case (though that's from an outsider's perspective). It also doesn't quite help that the best movie I've seen is Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.

Movie-based videogames are just easier to make just from how the medium of each is done.

There have only been like 2 well-received video game movies (Werewolves Within & Detention) but there have been several more well-received or even critically acclaimed movie-based video games (Goldeneye, Sweet Home, X-Men Origins Wolverine, Spider-Man 2, The Punisher '05, Alien series games). It a question of sheer numbers though as there have been far more movie video games made than vice versa.

Pretty sure Sonic has usurped it as generally being considered the best one. Have you seen that?

Movies are a better medium for conveying story and video games are a better medium for conveying action. Movie games and game movies are both usually action thingies, and movies usually require a lot more of the non-action stuff than games, and the non-action stuff in the games is usually not the best part, so the movie has a higher proportion of non-best-part stuff.

Good video game movies would probably be story-driven. I bet you could convert all kinds of RPGs and VNs into movies.

Huh... Is it really?

I actually haven't. Not after the initial backlash regarding the horrible design, which was later (thankfully) redone, Jim Carrey starring as Eggman, and the guy from the movie Hop being his companion. I could be stuck with a false perception, though.

But hey, talking about that, I'm thoroughly convinced the initial design was a planned self-bad-advertisement so it could gather attention once the redesign was done, but surprisingly few people believe that.

If we're gonna jinx it like that, then I Wanna Be The Guy: The Movie: The Game takes the cake no contest.

I'm pretty sure they made merchandise based on the old design, so I think this was just a case of incompetence.

Heck, even run of the mill movie-based video games like Narnia or Barnyard are still moderately enjoyable in general, IMO.

I always thought the only pretty-well-received movie was Advent Children. Never heard of the ones mentioned.

I mean by critics AND fans alike. I don't think AC was well received by critics. Werewolves Within is a comedy horror film that came out this year actually and is based on a somewhat obscure VR game by Ubisoft (the film is at 86/81 at RT). Detention is a Taiwanese film that came out in 2019 and based on the game by Red Candle Games (you might know them better for the whole China/Devotion Winnie the Pooh thing). Detention has an 85% on RT and was even nominated for 12 awards, including best feature, at the Golden Horse Awards.

Its hard to say, movie-based video game tie-ins were maligned for an entire generation but I guess the medium has changed? I still have the perception of "lol movie games", but get oddly excited at the idea of a game-based movie?

And yeah the Sonic movie as someone mentioned was actually pretty damn good.

There's also the fact that a bad movie is only bad for like an hour and a half, a bad video game is bad for your entire playthrough.

if a video game is bad I'm not getting through an entire playthrough

but a movie based on a game is more likely to flop because for some reason they have to add unnecessary elements and change stuff around which alienates fans of the game

Mortal Kombat just being a martial arts tournament with fatalities is why it's the best video game movie
