The one problem in America that Americans will not admit is that we have a "Keeping Up With The Joneses" mentality in that we all or at least most of us think we deserve a nice home, car, and lots of money and if we fail to achieve that, we think we have failed.

In a country that has produced so many millionaires and billionaires, it's only natural that people want to achieve success on that level but the cold reality is only a handful of people will ever reach that plateau.

Personally, I have never been a jealous person or a person who is envious of what others have so that sort of thing doesn't bother me as much as it does some people.

It's like seeing a guy with a hot girl and you think how can I get a hot girl. Just get the girl that makes you happy!

Not unless it's one of a kind or something, although even then I'd have to really want it. Otherwise I see things as being aspirational. Most things in life are attainable if you're willing to work hard for them, and are willing to be a little creative.

Most people nowadays are soft, which is partly a fault of the entire system discouraging people from ever doing for themselves.

Usually not material things. I am jealous of people who have secure and stable lives, but I don't end up bitterly wishing harm on them for it, mostly because I don't see comfort and stability as a zero sum game, and it obviously has nothing to do with individual actors for the most part on that level usually. There's a disconnect, to a point, between people's material objects which I may desire and the individual in question, so... *shrug*

I'm not envious of the wealthy; my issues with the wealthy have nothing to do with envy save that I resent that I resent how much damage they do with their financial practices, but that's not the same thing.

That said, I AM envious of neurotypical people and pretty much always have been, to the point where I struggled as a child to suppress bitter and/or vengeful impulses on people who gave me shit for my obvious divergence from the norm. It still comes up on rare occasion in the form of my older siblings whining about how I should "just be normal." If there had been any hope of that (and there wasn't), it was ruined with the non-stop shit they gave me as a child. You don't get to spend years thoroughly grinding a person's ego into the dust and then bitch and moan about how inconvenient it is that they aren't well-adjusted.

Not envious. I still have good friends and family, able to live a comfortable life, and working a job that I still enjoy despite being occasionally stressed about some projects.

There is that constant concern of whether or not I will be able to retire comfortably in my 60s without worrying about finances for the next 10-20 years after. I am been shifting more funds toward my 40k, mutual funds, IRA, etc. and can only hope in the next 30 years, I put in enough.

Same. I used to get kinda envious about other people that seemed to have everything go right for them in life but as I've gotten older I've learned that you should be satisfied with what you got and realize that there are many things that are simply out of your control. But I guess it also helps that things are better for me now than they used to be. It's just not worth it to be envious of others though. Things aren't always as great as they may seem for others as well

Considering that the average life expectancy is around 80 now, 60 is still relatively young. Unless you're involved in something overly physical that does long-term damage to your body, I should think you'd still be in good shape. And honestly, most of the deterioration tends to happen *after* people retire. That's one reason why most high-performers try to delay retirement as much as possible.

I can understand wanting the financial security so if you can't work anymore you'd be covered, but that's a largely separate issue.

I mean kind of, but there's a tradeoff for everything in life. If I was envious of someone's relationship then if I get that relationship I'd have to sacrifice my chill otaku (yeah I'm just gonna use that word unironically because it fits) lifestyle because I'd have to work EXTRA hard and invest a lot of boring and suffering time to 'be worthy' of that girlfriend and put on a fake personality to be interesting to them potentially and no doubt you'll have to deal with their day to day *****ing. Same thing with getting a better job and more money. You gotta think about the time invested. Sure there are some people who get free rides on stuff and EZmode in life but those people have got to be few and far between. There's usually a breaking point on where the effort just isn't worth the time invested for you personally. That doesn't mean to just not try at all, but to know where the ideal medium is that's worth it for your life. I mean they do say happiness peaks off with money at X amount of wealth too.

From a semantic standpoint, the two words seem almost alike. The difference is less about meaning than context in most cases >_>

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/envy#note-1

Jealousy vs. Envy
Depending on who you ask, jealousy and envy are either exact synonyms, totally different words, or near-synonyms with some degree of semantic overlap and some differences. It is difficult to make the case, based on the evidence of usage that we have, for either of the first two possibilities. Both jealousy and envy are often used to indicate that a person is covetous of something that someone else has, but jealousy carries the particular sense of zealous vigilance and tends to be applied more exclusively to feelings of protectiveness regarding ones own advantages or attachments. In the domain of romance, it is more commonly found than envy. If you were to say your salt-shaker collection fills me with jealousy, most people would take it to mean much the same thing as your salt-shaker collection fills me with envy. But if someone made a flirtatious comment to your partner, you would likely say that it caused you jealousy, not envy.
