Despite being a kids show much of the show is also serialized rather than episodic (although it does become episodic at times, like the early episodes of GX and Zexal). Considering I don't even remember them running at the same time, it's a weird comparison to make. Once the manga ended then, regardless of popularity relative to Yu Gi Oh, the series would be destined to end. CLAMP simply doesn't churn out work on the volume needed to make a continual ongoing series (few people/groups do) so that it was going to end was guarenteed. Meanwhile Konami was throwing it's weight behind Yu Gi Oh and it had a massive merchandising backing as well that ensure that, so long as the franchise didn't flop, it would have multiple series released if only to serve as ads for its real-world products (which were more than just the TCG even though that was easily the single largest thing). Was Card Captors more popular than Yu Gi Oh? I don't know. It didn't help that they only got 39 episodes translated, had those episodes heavily edited, then tried to target the male audience (despite it's female lead), and aired those episodes out-of-order.
