A 17 year old boy was drunk riding an electric bike home at 11:50 at night and was struck and killed by a woman driving an SUV with her 8 year old daughter in the car.

The woman got out to check on the boy and she was struck and killed by a passing vehicle in front of her 8 year old.

I hate this job sometimes I stg

Seriously. Apparently she got out and saw her mom's dying body in the road.

Yes, absolutely. He stopped and the police showed up less than 1 minute later. The deceased woman was on the phone with 911 dispatch already and her last words were "Stop, stop!" then she was struck by the vehicle.

Does your work have any sort of counseling or time-off for mental health for this sort of stuff?

Nah, it's just part of the job. This isn't even the worst wrongful death claim I've handled. The worst are when kids drown in a pool.

I had a claim where a kid drowned in a pool at a huge party with tons of people but no one saw because her grandma wasn't supervising her and she was under a bunch of pool floaties. Some woman just saw her floating by and noticed she was dead. She was like 2 years old with no safety equipment or supervision.

It really can be. It's hard to focus on other work and move on from a claim like this in one day. I can't just shift my mood back to do a regular claim. It just sticks on you. It's prob going to affect my mood all night.

I just hope we can provide coverage because those motorized bicycles are very on the edge of being defined as a motor vehicle on our policy. I hate claims like that because I really want to take a huge stressor off the insured by being able to provide an attorney and pay for the defense against the lawsuit but it's not my decision it's obviously based on the policy.

Do you know if the 8 year old has a dad to take care of her or other family?

Money might help but I really hope she has family that can comfort her and provide her a home etc.

I don't think I could do your job Jen, if I was unable to help people in situations like that it would break my heart.

Yeah I had a friend who used to work for the police and said it really got too much. He got called to a house where a woman had drowned her baby in the bath.

So they turn up to the house and it's all fucked up cause on one hand the woman has just killed her own toddler in the bath which is bad enough but on the other hand you find yourself having to sympathise with the woman because she's not 100% all there mentally and she's bawling her eyes out cause her child is dead and she can't understand why

these types of jobs are so intense. I didn't even realise insurance would get this bad but yeah i would def struggle

Her grandfather adopted her and is her legal parent now. Money will help pay for her to do things her mom would have been responsible for so it's less stressful. It also will pay for therapy for her.

My wife wants to get a pool and I'm against it in part because I'm afraid of waking up one morning and finding one of my kids drowned in it.

When we're at the beach or whatever I keep a close eye on them but in my house they'll go outside to play and I won't be watching them the whole time because they're in my yard you know?

I'm also lazy and don't want to deal with maintaining a pool...

But yeah I hate reading about kids drowning in their own backyard it's a complete nightmare scenario :( or kids suffocating in an old trunk in the attic or some shit

UGH, I really really really HOPE the mom wasn't intoxicated, ugh.

Also an electric bike isn't a scooter, it's just a bike that goes at the speed of a normal bike but you don't pedal I believe.

So blaming someone for riding on one while intoxicated is a bit much. He wasn't gonna hurt anyone probably (normally) except maybe himself. In this case that wasn't true, but it's not like it raises to the level of someone driving drunk and even in that case wishing death apon them is a bit extreme (sometimes understandable but extreme).

When I was a kid somewhere on the east coast, I was hopping over fences to get to school (faster way then following the roads). I fell into a pool with a cover on it in someones back yard. There was snow on the ground that covered the whole thing and I happened to step right on the edge, so fell through.

It was pitch black underneath (due to the cover and snow. Still don't remember getting out/back home but I did somehow. Totally insane that I survived that.

Pools are freaking deadly, if you do get one, try getting an above ground pool (we had a micheal phelps one). They have a ladder you need to climb, and you an even move it away from the pool so nobody can get in. Also had a hard top that went over it. They are not that much more expensive and totally safe from having kids fall in it etc.

Put a fence around it and use a pool alarm that will alert you if someone sneaks over the fence and goes in without supervision.

You can also pay a pool service to take care of the pool.

Here is the pool we had, also works as a very large hot tub. It's above ground so totally safe. It might be a bit more expensive (I forget the costs been like 10+ years), but it's pretty awesome.

The maintenance is a huge pain in the ass, it isn't worth it. And once you put it in it is there and needs to be maintained forever.

Also was it some one here talking about how the were visiting a crime scene of somebody rolling on to their kid while they slept and killing them and the paramedic not having the heart to tell them that they were the one's that killed them?
