It technically is, since it's a memorial for a professor

The rock itself has nothing wrong with it - people just started calling it named one day back in the 30s and now because it's known by that name (which is a slur) they're blaming the rock for it

Are we sure about that? All the articles I've found about this rock say that it was referred to by that name in that one 1925 article, but they don't mention any other times. And that name was just the name for that kind of rock, not that rock's specific name. I feel that if it was used more often and/or more recently to insult black people, or if, say, it was a place where black people were lynched, the news reports would say that.

Yea that Rock is not only racist but rude Arv walked by and it called Arv an asshole that rock deserves what it gets lets just hope it doesnt pee on anyone while they move it

Students who go there have a problem with it. A lot of you have never even been to Wisconsin, let alone this University or the rock in question.

Their opinion carries more weight than your anonymous internet opinions about a place you just discovered because a poorly researched article was put out to ruffle your feathers. And not shockingly at all, the same group falls for it every time.

You dont refer to something as a nickname if its only been used once in history. Thats basically the exact opposite of the definition for a nickname.

however, people do care what it's called, especially when it's objectively racist

getting upset that a rock with a racist nickname is being moved is ridiculous, especially when you've never been around it, or ever was going to be there.

the people who are there have a right to be upset, because it's racist, which is a very big issue.

At no point have I actually voiced an opinion about the rock at all.

And if I did, unlike nearly everyone else in this topic, I wouldn't do so based on a single article that barely provides any meaningful info on the subject and is of suspect veracity anyway (the New York Post is kind of a shit paper, and it tends towards biased sensationalism). Sources matter.

I was simply pointing out that demanding that the universe conform to your interpretation of what is and isn't offensive - because other people's opinions don't actually matter to you - is just as much egotistical asshole behavior as completely dismissing the idea that anyone else can be offended simply because you aren't. In both cases, you're basically declaring your own opinions are incontrovertible fact and then throwing a tantrum until everyone else agrees.

It's another symptom of the modern world in general - how we access information today is polarizing how we see the world, and it's always widening the divide between "us" and "them". But no matter how comforting it can be to assume you're one of the ones who are "right" and everyone else is "The Enemy", it's rarely that simple, and often times BOTH extremes are wrong.

The knee-jerk response to nearly everything online is "IF YOU'RE NOT WITH ME YOU'RE AGAINST ME!", and all that's ever going to accomplish in the end is leaving pretty much everyone wondering why everyone else is an asshole.
