do you even know what the actual reasons or motivations were for this rock being moved? Do you know who made the call? Do you care? Or are you just arguing against a begrudged perception?

There doesn't seem to be much to the story beyond the headline. The university chancellor made the call, at the request of the Black Student Union, because the Black Student Union feels it represents a history of racism.
