This is hilarious to me because its a prime example of people from a certain political party not educating themselves on what they are actually voting on and its consequences and instead basing their decisions on knee jerk emotional responses. Hope everyone in California enjoys not having any bacon or paying more than double what it currently costs starting next year.

tbh, these laws effectively subsidize big businesses by effectively removing competition from smaller farms.

lolwut? If you bothered to read the article, you'd know they consume far more than they produce. Their local production meets maybe a fifth of their demand (actually, I think I need to re-read it myself to see if their local production upgraded already, because that might be an added issue)

Article is misleading af but yeah if pig farms cant meet guidelines chosen by the public then yeah they should close down rather than put a bunch of animals through unnecessary abuse and destroying the environment in the process

Bacon is okay sometimes but honestly half the time its so freaking salty that you cant taste anything else. Even if it went away entirely which it obviously isnt going to in the state, I wouldnt really miss it.

I'm confused because isn't every vote based on your feelings..? You are voting for what the rules of your society should be. Those decisions are based on you weighing the importance of perceived value.

Which is just a more verbose way of saying "voting with your feelings."

Yeah I'm selfish but everything in this life costs too much already. An 800 square foot house shouldn't cost $140,000. Finding affordable housing right now is ridiculous and anything I can find is in the ghetto.

Glad this is just California one more thing to drive up the cost of living over there LOL

California is expensive because rich assholes have bought up all the housing and then made it illegal to build more. In other words: selfishness.

California is responsible for 15% of all pork consumption in the entire US, which is actually higher than their share of the population.

Pork producers are not going to ignore a market of that size and even if they were, nowhere else is going to suddenly increase their pork consumption by enough to offset the difference - just carving out California from the pork market would result in a glut of supply, price drops, and herds being culled as producers are suddenly unable to find buyers for their hogs. So yes, they will upgrade; it will take time to do so and they will pass on the costs to consumers, but none of that is unexpected or untenable.

"In Iowa, which raises about one-third of the nations hogs, farmer Dwight Mogler estimates the changes would cost him $3 million and allow room for 250 pigs in a space that now holds 300."

Which, in turn, means the price of pork products can be expected to increase by ~20% to compensate for the lost production capacity. That's enough to cut down on the amount people are going to be buying, certainly, but it's hardly "California has no more bacon," and it's not such a prohibitive loss as to warrant cutting out California's market entirely.

The fact that so few pig farmers have hit the targets is less a matter of those targets being unattainable and more a matter of them deciding it was hard and hoping the law would be changed before coming into effect.
