I can't believe how much I'm enjoying this game, given modern trends of the Musou series.

I'm about 35 hours in and just beat Nobunaga's path. I'm about to do Mitsuhide's, and then there's also a hypothetical path I'll need to do as well.

Yep, it's been out for a few days actually.

It's on Switch, Steam, PS4, and X1.

What's crazy is that it's apparently outsold SW4 in it's first week.

How does this one compare to 4?

more over the top stuff that doesn't work with the mainline games. the spinoff games are better now.

enemies flop in unison. whole clouds of enemies flop the exact same way and act like they are attached to each other on strings.

earlier games were better

This game isn't like the trash that was WO4 or Warriors All-Stars or some of the other more recent games.

It's combat is actually engaging.

TC, did you play the prior SW games? I've always preferred them to DW series. Just curious if it's "surprisingly fun" b/c of stuff that's been part of the SW franchise all along, or for actual changes.
As a huge fan of the prior SW games, I've been pretty hesitant about SW5. I liked SW already, though the latest games have changed for the worse (more like DW).
Also, they cut Nene, and that's inexcusable!

Yep. Huge musou fan and I consider DW3 and SW2 to be the pinnacle of the series.

SW5 I feel is a pretty big leap in terms of gameplay with a small amount of changes that are surprisingly not that drastic. Everything feels balanced well for the first time in a long time.

The enemies don't just stand there and the artificial difficulty has taken a bit of a back seat. It's still there to an extent, but OHKOs being the only genuine threat are a thing of the past. In fact, there's hardly any OHKOs in the game unless your character is severely underleveled in regards to the difficulty you're playing on, much like in past games. Enemies are more aggressive and are constant threats to your health again.

I wouldn't put it on par with the best of the genre like DW3, SW2, and WO3U, but it's solidly in the upper half of the franchise and more importantly, gives me a positive outlook for future SW games. I haven't felt good about new Warriors games in a long, long time. Except for new release hype. I always fall victim to that.

Heck, I was actually pretty down on the game until release because I couldn't for the life of me figure out what Koei's marketing strategy was. Cut characters, low amount of movesets(and I'm more lenient on clones than most fans), redesigns(which I've grown to like).... But hey, NEW ARTSTYLE!!!

And yet, I'm completely happy with my purchase despite it being influenced by my penchant to impulse buy games from this series.

As for Warriors Orochi 4, it's basically WAS with the DW and SW cast. And the Ultimate upgrade was a complete ripoff. Considering what Ultimate did for the previous game, what we got this time around is a joke.

Nice, SW5 is my first SW game, but for the longest time DW3 was my fave.

What else have you enjoyed that's come out this year so far?

For me:

Hitman 3: Such an unbelievably satisfying ending to my favorite stealth series!

The Medium: It's probably the best PS2 era Silent Hill love letter I've ever played. It's also the best game I've played from 2021 so far. Highly underrated, and I can't recommend it enough, especially if you prefer eerie over scary!

And I just played:

Horror Tales: The Wine (Amazing First Person Horror Adventure game, best indie horror game I've played all year)

Yeah, the only people that have played more games than me this year are these 2 people I know on the nonstop gaming board that are constantly playing 8 and 16 bit console games, and arcade games. I though I played a ton of SNES games a year(usually play at least a 2-4 dozen.) But I got nothing on them!

And eh, I don't really bother with DLC with games. I get a lot more out of mostly focusing on the main part, then moving on.

Overall I like the gameplay and story, aside from some questionable choices.

I sort of thought the same. I'm on Chapter 4 of Mitsuhide's story and seeing his perspective of things does help a little bit.

It's still not on the level of storytelling that was in Spirit of Sanada.

I've only played the demo but the problem I have with it is that it's a not an English dub so when I'm playing, I'm concentrating on murdering mooks, not reading what they're saying so I feel like I'm missing out on things during battles like mission objectives or story. It's a problem I've had with the more recent SW games like 4-2 and SoS. Even as crappy as DW9's dub was, it was still a dub so I didn't mind it.

I like it. The one thing Im not big on it blocking. Especially since its hard to do in the middle of a combo. In HW and AoC, you had B to dodge. And it easily canceled other stuff. They say Youngman use Bto evade. But it usually seems to jump instead. And it doesnt make you run crazy fast after use. Other than that, I like it

It plays like a SW game but feels like the Fire Emblem Warriors game on the switch.

SW 2 is my fave musou game of all time, so cool. Not a fan of DW overall, but DW4 is my favorite, then DW3.

I don't think they were ever "easy", there were plenty of higher difficulty battles where you could get 2-hit, 3-hit, or 4-hit. And when characters can attack that quickly w/o a stamina bar like Souls games, you can absolutely get WTF combo'd to death suddenly on the hard difficulties.
But I did hate how the mooks got dumbed down and weakened over time. I'd rather have less KOs and enemies be tougher, like in the older games. So...sounds good. The reviews I saw, it looked like the same old useless grunts, glad that's not the case.

I dislike the new artstyle, looks a lot more generic and same-y, and if they wanted more realism they failed on that front, too. Like, Mitsuhide was bald, not a pretty boy w/ long flowing hair.
SW has never had clones, so I wouldn't expect them on a cut cast.

As for Warriors Orochi 4, it's basically WAS with the DW and SW cast. And the Ultimate upgrade was a complete ripoff. Considering what Ultimate did for the previous game, what we got this time around is a joke.
Ok, I'd like more elaboration on this. I hated WAS b/c it was super dumbed down musou combat and really poorly balanced. I love the Deception characters, but it's literally pointless to play a trap setup type style when the reward for pulling it off is being as good as the other characters.
And the damn "Brave" system where enemies are difficulty ranked separately. End result seemed to be if you tried to do any side missions off the main path, your commander would always freaking die, so you had to just beeline it every battle to the finish. It's like the thing musou games have always been criticized for, but this time it's actually really really fucking present.
So...how exactly is Orochi 4 like WAS? Did it actually have the simplified move sets, stupid phantom KOs thing, Brave rankings, etc...?

Krow_Incarnate posted...

Yeah. I like a lot of his stuff especially w/ corporations and microtransactions. But some stuff really pisses me off. One is his unfair treatment of the SW series. I've NEVER seen him actually make a video review of a SW game, only DW games. He only ever brings up SW to slander both DW and SW as a group and often in the process proves he knows abso fucking lutely nothing about the SW series (such as "DW and SW have always been plagued with clone characters" -- uh, Jim, Samurai Warriors, has NEVER had clones, you fucking hack!)

In the first few SW games, they had an evade button (DW didn't, may have adopted it later). SW2 even introduced dodge canceling and jump canceling for the series (limited to certain characters b/c they all had unique skill trees, another thing that made early SW games way better than DW).
Either SW 3 or 4 replaced it w/ a "spirit gauge". When full, you can go into Rage Mode and become stupid overpowered and invincible for a bit, but you can also spend part of the charge to dodge out of being combo'd, so I guess that was their dodge replacement. Does SW5 still have that?

Did some wiki-diving and Googling. Turns out Mitsuki is not fully fictional afterall, just that she is loosely based on Nobuyuki's son, who was a baby when Nobuyuki died and was raised under a different name (because he was illegitamate, like his other brother that was the same age), Wikipedia does not even have a birthdate for Nobuyuki's legitimate son...

Heh, they added that to SW4, guess they took that back out.

On the plus side; including that meant removing each character having individual story modes and instead having factional ones like DW, which sucked. I much prefer having each character have their own story where maybe a battle is presented a bit differently, and possibly include battles where other playable characters weren't present.
Downside is that then you don't necessarily have anyone to switch to, so they can't use that feature.

As long as you can still call your horse, it's not bad.

I mean, each character has their own storyline, which is cool. But you can choose a main and partner character. I just wish I could swap between them. It just kind of feels pointless to just tell them where to go most of the time. Like, sometimes, I want to send them somewhere while I head somewhere else to do certain objectives and stuff Plus, I can try out more characters faster. Like on one stage, I got three new characters. So, I want to play that level three times to try them all out. Or on another level where I got 4 new characters. And I want to try all 4 out. But its ok, I guess

If not, then that's a really odd and unfortunate choice.

Because yeah, that was the whole point. Send B to the next place you want to go, switch to B, send A to the next objective, switch to A, etc... Basically no running around the map.

You can for the most part. There's only a handful of stages where you can't. Most of the stages have you pick a partner.

How do you switch to the partner, though? The only thing Ive been able to do is tell them where to go. How do I take control of them? Is that on the next stage or something where they tell you how to?

Check the control change screen. I think the default is the centre button on a controller that is not "start/+". So - on Switch controller, select on other controllers, I think.
