Most people have never actually listened to one of her videos they just spit on her name because they listened to a neckbeard on YouTube or Twitter.

Just look at how Gamers respond to a woman having a prominent role in almost any recent AAA game, or how they claim that any new character/costume design that doesn't strip someone down to pasties is "censorship", or how kicking/banning people for saying racial slurs in game chat or being abusive on mic is "stealing your money" or freedom of speech.

Basically she was right about a lot of what she said.

She was playing a character. I bet the real Anita is pretty chill.

In her first few episodes, she had her hair down, brought up some legitimate issues with regards to inequality, and peppered her videos with some comedy. Then she adopted the flannel outfit, started speaking in an authoritarian voice, and brought up intentionally bad examples to troll people.

She's like a lot of people who speak on sensitive subject matters: they galvanize their side by offending people on the other side. It's the same method employed, to varying degree, by the likes of Richard Dawkins, Michael Moore, and the late but unlamented Rush Limbaugh.

Anybody who thinks she's the reason why female characters in modern video games and animation look ugly is assigning too much importance to her. She has nowhere near that level of influence. She's a symptom of the current environment, not the cause of it.

I said this recently and I'll say it again.

The only reason she's as remotely influential to the degree that she has been is because of the stupid fucking chuds who made a game of harassing her. They're the people who made her the face of online feminism. They're the people who shone a spotlight on every little thing she did and put her face on thousands of video thumbnails and her name in thousands of video titles.

Their campaign against her was built on the back of lie after outrageous lie for the sake of pandering to an anti-SJW crowd who had come to see her as the face of the movement, and that in turn led to her taking on a visible role on social media - both to defend herself against the unprecedented wave of harassment and attention she received, and to use what infamy and influence she had gotten to spread her ideals.

Anita Sarkeesian would still have her own fanbase and some degree of popularity without the backlash, but the fact is that she wouldn't be a household name among the terminally online circles who know about her without the Gamergate morons who elevated her to the face of a movement through their behavior. She was targeted because her Kickstarter blew up, sure - for better or for worse she was going to have fans and get attention for what she was doing. But she would never be as relevant as she is today - to the point where topics like this are still popping up on message boards like this - without the gamergaters whose collected disdain for her gave her more of a platform than she ever would have otherwise.

My thoughts on Anita Sarkeesian herself? I don't really care. I don't watch her content, she's not in any of my online media circles, I have no judgements on the content of her character or the content she produces. I understand she fell from grace, and that makes me even less likely to seek her out. I'm not that interested in her as a person.

My thoughts on Anita Sarkeesian as a public figure? The people who hated her the most are the people who made her the most relevant, and I truly believe that the gamergaters who elevated her to such a prominent position despite hating her so much are some of the stupidest motherfuckers on the internet. I fully believe that the proponents of her backlash are the same kinds of people who dropped their Gillette products in the toilet in the wake of that ad, or who (used to) express their discontent with a brand by buying up a bunch of their stock and destroying it on camera as a form of protest. Like, they still got your money and exposure, numbnuts. You're still helping them.

I don't care enough about Anita Sarkeesian as a person or content creator to know or talk much about her. But regardless of whatever the hell her deal is to anyone, I find her fascinating as a public figure, and I doubt I could dislike her more than the people who made her the face of a movement against her will and against the interests of online leftists at the time.

Since you mentioned this, I remember how she would get caught using reviewer gameplay footage and claiming as it her own gameplay in her videos. And this is representative of the issue of her complaints and others who followed suit over the years. They want developers to cater to them even though they were never customers or the targeted demographic in the first place.

Men and women have different tastes, and this is well documented. Making an action adventure game better appeal to women than other titles in its genre is an incredibly difficult task. Slapstick solutions like "make a woman protagonist!" or "make strong female characters" don't work.

She's getting mad at a 3 year article that gives tips on how to reduce your own carbon footprint. All of our choices matter, and the whole "not my responsibility" idea is dangerous. The individuals who think this way, the more it adds up. Same with people deciding not to vote. And consumer demand for green alternatives does affect corporations' decisions. I'm not saying you should yell at the next person you see eating beef, but any switch to alternatives helps.

racist con artist, that some people on the left love. She gets more love because sexist people hate her a lot and will address her points with sexism and not logic, thus making it harder for people who just don't like her as person ( and not as women) to be heard.

I thought she just looked at some video games through a feminist lens.
