I loved her videos because she'd point out a lot of stuff in games that I missed or didn't think you could do (for better or worse)

Shes a pretty shitty person and she affected the gaming sphere very negatively.

She brought up points that were just plain wrong (see: Saying hitman encourages you to kill hookers but yet the game penalizes you for killing non-targets).

She brought up points about sexualization which were strongly in the minority (even at the height of sexualization in video games, it was still a minority of games. Also theres nothing wrong with sexy people.

She stole footage from other gamers on youtube and claimed it as her own.

The only reason she's as remotely influential to the degree that she has been is because of the stupid fucking chuds who made a game of harassing her. They're the people who made her the face of online feminism. They're the people who shone a spotlight on every little thing she did and put her face on thousands of video thumbnails and her name in thousands of video titles.

Their campaign against her was built on the back of lie after outrageous lie for the sake of pandering to an anti-SJW crowd who had come to see her as the face of the movement, and that in turn led to her taking on a visible role on social media - both to defend herself against the unprecedented wave of harassment and attention she received, and to use what infamy and influence she had gotten to spread her ideals.

Anita Sarkeesian would still have her own fanbase and some degree of popularity without the backlash, but the fact is that she wouldn't be a household name among the terminally online circles who know about her without the Gamergate morons who elevated her to the face of a movement through their behavior. She was targeted because her Kickstarter blew up, sure - for better or for worse she was going to have fans and get attention for what she was doing. But she would never be as relevant as she is today - to the point where topics like this are still popping up on message boards like this - without the gamergaters whose collected disdain for her gave her more of a platform than she ever would have otherwise.

My thoughts on Anita Sarkeesian herself? I don't really care. I don't watch her content, she's not in any of my online media circles, I have no judgements on the content of her character or the content she produces. I understand she fell from grace, and that makes me even less likely to seek her out. I'm not that interested in her as a person.

My thoughts on Anita Sarkeesian as a public figure? The people who hated her the most are the people who made her the most relevant, and I truly believe that the gamergaters who elevated her to such a prominent position despite hating her so much are some of the stupidest motherfuckers on the internet. I fully believe that the proponents of her backlash are the same kinds of people who dropped their Gillette products in the toilet in the wake of that ad, or who (used to) express their discontent with a brand by buying up a bunch of their stock and destroying it on camera as a form of protest. Like, they still got your money and exposure, numbnuts. You're still helping them.

I don't care enough about Anita Sarkeesian as a person or content creator to know or talk much about her. But regardless of whatever the hell her deal is to anyone, I find her fascinating as a public figure, and I doubt I could dislike her more than the people who made her the face of a movement against her will and against the interests of online leftists at the time.

This one is actually false. She had a kickstarter to do a bunch of videos and got like 30x more money than she asked for, so she said "alright I'm gonna put way more effort into it to justify this much money and its gonna be late", and then it came late.

There are way better justifications to not like her.

It was like mass insanity. I remember back when the "gamergate" thing was at its peak, someone posted that she was a racist because she denies the Armenian genocide. Something like five or six people agreed, at least one of them saying "I know, I saw this already."

I did a google search for "Anita Sarkeesian Armenian genocide" and the first thing to come up was a post, by Anita Sarkeesian, in which she commemorated the Armenian genocide and talked about her own Armenian ancestors who had fled the Armenian genocide.

Meh. From what I remember I watched the first, maybe first two of her videos she raised all that money for and they were just generic reciting of stuff everyone knows mixed in with some inaccuracies and not much in the way of actual arguments. Lost interest after that. All that hype around her was ridiculous, she was just a generic video maker that happened to pick the right or wrong time, depending on how you look at it, to make her generic videos and end up at the centre of a ton of insane people raging at her while other people acted like she was some sort of genius out to save the gaming world forever.

the scam claim is that she swindled people with a kickstarter she never delivered on and that she asked for to much
but she only asked for like 10K and supporters of her kickstarter ended up giving her 10 times the amount she asked for so instead of pocketing that she just increased the scope of her project and used the money to make it larger than it was planned
so fans gave her money to create her videos and she used the money to create the videos

no one was tricked or scammed they gave her money and she used the money to do what they asked her in the first place but on a grander scale because when you get so much more than you asked for you become obligated to increase the size of your project

She was caught copying video footage from let's players and when they requested to take it down she claimed it was "fair use"

It's not really the controversy people think it is to begin with and it's not clear if the LP'er has the right to request that anyway as the footage is probably still owned by the publisher.

Why are you red herring this? It is fair use to use someone else's gameplay. It's still a scam to pass it off as your own with no credit to who they stole it from. That's plagiarism.

I am not sure what the legality of it is but it's probably not plagiarism. Her work is the commentary, not the game footage. If you can point me to a video where she's like "this is me playing through Zelda games" and it's actually stolen footage I'd love to see it.

The only actual issue I really recall was her complaining you could be a dick to female npcs in Hitman, even though you could be to men just as much. Otherwise she generally brought up actual issues, and was made into the "star" she was by the very people who hated she was gaining popularity.
