IIRC, the original way to "resign" a duel was to place your hand over your deck, which admitted defeat to your opponent. Did anyone actually do that in tourneys?

I only played for fun with my buddies, but one friend randomly did that in a match (I had him pretty much dead to rights), and we all laughed our asses off.

The thing I also love about Yata-Garasu is that all the YGO video games have a rule coded in that they detect when they're in a Yata-lock and surrender immediately. They fear the small birb.

scrolling through this in the morning and i thought this was about Gale for a sec. what a twist that would have been

i guess i'll actually check out the anime sometime to see the Wings in action.

excellent.

2009? that was also the year Blackwings won the world championship iirc.

also, damn 3 gale & 2 allure looks fun. when i was playing they were both at 1. not that i was even close to being 'good'

top 8 at nationals is really impressive! the site lists the deck value as $108 and i did a double take but then it listed DAD as $1. curious as to how much that was going for back then.

When DAD first released and was at 3, he was going for 250-300 canadian a pop. Thankfully once he got limited he dropped to a more respectable price.

#28: Parasite Paracide
First TCG release: Pharaohs Servant (2002-10-20)

This is one of the craziest cards ever. First of all its iconic as hell because of the anime and was a feature in not one but TWO of Joeys duels (remember when he forgot to take it out of his deck after the Weevil duel so he had to summon it against Mako?). But also, the card effect reads that you put it FACE UP into your opponents deck and shuffle it. Like what the fuck? Now, whenever I played casually with this and its effect went off, I would just shuffle it to the top so that my opponent would draw it immediately and take 1000 damage. Now, did they want me (the owner of the card) to shuffle it or my opponent to shuffle their own deck. Because either way that ends with some fuckery. Not even taking card sleeves into account, its fucking FACE UP.

But yeah this card is really bad lol

I feel like that's not how it should work, not that that ever stopped the anime before lol

It's a cool card but it feels really underpowered to me. I assume the face-up condition is so your opponent can't pretend to have not drawn it, but it doesn't seem strong enough for anyone to risk getting caught cheating just to avoid its rather minor effects.

Another potential reason for the face up condition is what if you're playing some crazy duel where both players are playing Parasite Paracide for some reason? You'd need to have a way to tell you drew the opponent's one instead of one of your own. (Assuming you can't tell from the card sleeves)

I'm loving this topic! Lots of nostalgia seeing some of the older cards I haven't thought about in forever. I have a similar story to some here in that I played in jr/high school and stopped for quite a few years before I got back into it really hardcore back in like... 2010 or 11? Synchros were in full swing. I think one of the first sets I remember coming out when I got back into it was the Ragnarok one? When I got to them on Legacy of the Duelist I got really excited for no reason lol.

Anyway, I quit playing irl right as Xyz were coming onto the scene. But continued through duel links for a while so I'm still fairly familiar with that period. I still don't know a lot about pendulum but they seem really stupid(broken) from my limited knowledge lol.

i THINK (and i'm saying this because i quit when they came out) the general consensus is that shortly after they came out, there was an archetype that became top tier that had Pendulums in it but other than that in recent years they are joke status.

So basically Pendulums WERE good when they came out in 2014 but then the New Master Rules in 2017 nerfed them pretty hard and they haven't really gotten back to what they were since. There are some Pendulum decks that can be decent, Time Magicians is a notable one iirc, but yea generally they aren't used too much. But that's why there's more room for me to use them!

#27: Graceful Charity
First TCG release: Starter Deck Pegasus (2003-03-30)

Oh whats that? You dont know what this card does? Graceful Charity lets me draw three new cards and discard two! Another broken card but the specific reason this card stuck with me is in fact anime related and how most of the time when they DRAW a card, theres so much unnecessary STYLE which is really the best thing about anime in general and how it injects so much flare into typically mundane activities resulting in hilarity. Ever since the first Rare Hunter drew his cards and you hear the tik-tik-tik as he draws his cards. So good.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XjUVAmsAm64

Heres a compilation someone made of the times they use Graceful Charity in the anime. I think the only must-see one is Mais at 1:10.

Bit of an afterthought but the angel artwork is really a plus. If there had been a pure angel archetype I would have loved to play it.

#24: Honest
First TCG release: Light of Destruction (2008-05-13)

Mostly here for the gorgeous art (the WINGS) but I have mixed feelings about handtraps. Its just not as COOL as a summon and lacks that feeling of oh Im actually PLAYING this monster. Even if you just use a card that you summoned for a very small effect, it still managed to hit the field. Or another way to think about it, if this was the anime and a monster was summoned you would get the hologram of it. At that point youre actually summoning/playing the monster whereas if you have a card like Honest, it retains its card form and you would like never see it and it would lack those personal feelings of attachment (at least for me) that come about when a monster actually battles or something.

I love the art so much though.

In the manga he simply forgot to take it out of his deck.. (and since it still used its manga effect, the Parasite infected his monsters instead lol)

Also Graceful Charity was great and I love how often the angel appears in other cards (mostly to be nice to a banned Sangan).

Handtraps are just awful to play against mentally. There's some fun in seeing that your opponent set something down and the nervousness of what could be waiting for you, or wondering if they're just bluffing. But having something spring out at you from their hand never feels great and just makes you feel paranoid for the entire game.

One other very small side effect about paracide being face up is that you know when you're about to draw it, so if you have a way to search your deck for something (which then allows you to shuffle your deck) you can then get it off the top of your deck.

Paracide is actually pretty good in duel links due to the 4k lifepoint total. People used to play stall decks with that and lava golem to burn you down pretty quick.

Also, to quote my judgment dragon ranking in my own topic:

It's definitely legal afaik. The thing is that I think it's considered proper to let your opponent cut your deck after shuffling in card games in general, so that's what a lot of people do to sort of "tamper-proof" your deck.

Unfortunately the ruling is that Parasite Paracide cannot die if it wants to activate its flip effect.. But yeah face-up cards in the deck can happen. Tho Paracide is the only one that puts itself in the opponents deck..

Also I dont think its even allowed anymore IRL because of how it would have to physically be traded.

A really great thing about yugioh card art is how they keep continuity or make references to other cards without any flavor text at all. Stuff like that up there is great. There's another one where a dog ends up lost and becomes a skeleton and ends up in another card adopted by a skeleton family. Just details like that are really cool imo.

#22: Kuriboh
First TCG release: Metal Raiders (2002-06-26)

I dont know if the actual card effect of taking no battle damage has ever been used in the anime but Kuriboh is the prime example to me of how much less from hand effects feel like real monsters. When they activate it from the hand, you just see them discard it into their duel disk graveyard yet every time we see Kuriboh summoned on the field its been absolutely iconic taking down all those BIG monsters like Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon and Thousand-Eyes Restrict with Multiply and in the filler virtual world arc where it picked itself as Yami Yugis deckmaster. Its been pointed out before but it could have maybe reached greater mascot potential if the original artwork was a little cuter, or looked like the anime version. But Im also appreciative of the wide-eyed creepy look and there are the other Kuriboh cards to supply the mainstream cuteness.

The anime never really made sense of Obelisks effect, especially when it somehow cannot destroy a god of equal power but still deliver a direct attack...

Kuriboh does also use its hand effect against Vivian in that filler tournament.
(Needless to say the above scene was also filler. In the manga Kuribohs only effect seems to be 'explode when it touches something')

And hey at least we got all the Kuriboh variants now.. (except for one of Yuya's manga performapals)
