I really like the idea of having parking lots be solar farms. Would give shade to the vehicles and generate power. Would make electric charging easier to do too.

I had an idea for making a turbine-electric car.

A turbine can run on almost any fuel: gasoline, diesel, kerosene, propane, natural gas, alcohol, hydrogen, etc. They are mechanically very simple compared to gas and diesel engines and can produce a great deal of power. But they have an issue with turbine lag; you advance the throttle and there's a short delay while it spools up.

Electric cars are also mechanically very simple, you can eliminate the transmission and drive shaft by putting a motor on each wheel. They can also produce tremendous amounts of torque, and produce zero emissions. But your range is limited by the capacity of the battery, which also has a finite lifespan.

But what if you took a turbine engine and attached it to an electric generator? Then you'd have the best of both worlds. The turbine would run at a constant or near constant speed so turbine lag wouldn't be an issue, you could burn a clean fuel like hydrogen for zero emissions or switch to another fuel like ethanol if that was all that was available, and you wouldn't be limited by the battery range.

I really wonder just how much big oil/coal has slowed progress.

Not political, though they definitely used politics to their advantage. Their motivation is based on their bottom line. Had they acknowledged their impact and we started transitioning sooner, they'd have made less. It's pretty much that simple.

I know some people wouldn't like it, but I'd like to see less rural living and more land returned to nature with trees planted and predators reintroduced if needed. My favorite stories are of some peoples' large scale long term campaigns to replant trees.

That wouldn't even be enough to follow an author for the course of their life, which is particularly stupid since for the first time in history authors can actually get the full use from their backlist thanks to ebooks and print on demand technology.

1837 Joseph Fourier published a paper in The American Journal of Science and Arts in which he predicted that the amount of heat held in by the atmosphere could be altered by natural and man-made activity.

1856 Eunice Newton Foote proved that carbon dioxide traps heat better than ordinary air and predicted that "an atmosphere of that gas would give our earth a high temperature."

1896 Svante Arrhenius created the first model of climate change, performing tens of thousands of calculations by hand. He predicted that if you doubled the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere, it would raise the earth's temperature by 5-6C.

Idk, most rural land I feel like is in places that were already naturally "undesirable" (i.e. flat and not much vegetation), or the ones that are pretty lush leave it pretty untouched.

But rural living absolutely is not something that would work for the broader population. And it provides a lot of constraint on supply chains for having to serve such a remote and small area.

Suburban planning already introduces a lot of inefficiency/waste (lawns anyone?). Urban is the most maximizing for sure even though we also have plenty of avoidable issues there
