1837 Joseph Fourier published a paper in The American Journal of Science and Arts in which he predicted that the amount of heat held in by the atmosphere could be altered by natural and man-made activity.

1856 Eunice Newton Foote proved that carbon dioxide traps heat better than ordinary air and predicted that "an atmosphere of that gas would give our earth a high temperature."

1896 Svante Arrhenius created the first model of climate change, performing tens of thousands of calculations by hand. He predicted that if you doubled the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere, it would raise the earth's temperature by 5-6C.
