Did you know his broken english in the movie was fake and he could speak it fluently?

You may not know this but the late Pat Morita, who played the sensei in the popular Karate Kid movies had actually FAKED his broken english in the movie because he was supposed to be a famous karate teacher from Japan..

But in reality, he was born in AMERICA, California to be exact and spoke perfect english.

If you see his other movies you would notice he didn't stumble in his english or had that accent like he did in this movie

did you know that?

How do you mean specifically?

It's more on the people who said "I can get you in a movie, but your character needs to have broken English." And considering the views of Hollywood on Asians, I'm pretty confident it had more to do with a shallow caricature of Asians than anything else.

If he was comfortable with that, cool, but knowing the hoops Asians have had to jump through to get roles it's actually pretty fucked up if that was specifically required.

Not canceling the dead specifically but more so what what blackjackcat posted how somehow its bad to have foreigners with foreign accents portrayed in media.

This part isnt a reply to you but it has always annoyed me how people seem to have deemed mimicking specific foreign accents as "offensive".
Try using a Russian, German, Irish, French or Scottish accent....thats fine. But a Japanese, Chinese, or Indian accent? Thats a big no no, why?
Lets be honest, accents are sexy, funny, cool and sometimes plain entertaining. But many times people strive to get rid of their accents, which is sad.

The use of accents is okay, but when the archetype of the time is "All Asians speak broken English" it's kind of offensive. I get that it's not unrealistic that people have accents, but I'm pretty sure that wasn't a realism choice and more "The honky American audience wouldn't relate to a well speaking Asian man."

Again, if the man was okay with that, that's fine and all, but if you catch up on the bullshit that Asian actors have to go through, someone saying "You're a great actor, but you need to be a stereotype to get work" is pretty messed up.

You do know there are people in Asia who have impeccable English right? I'm also saying generally if those were the only roles getting thrown his way, the the typecast of Asian immigrant with broken English, that's pretty messed up, and a thing that actually did happen back then to Asian actors.

1) Those WEREN'T the only roles thrown his way, so your remarks are ignorant on top of being racist

2) Putting out exceptions to the general rule is pedantic and silly. While you had highly fluent speakers in other countries, that wasn't the every day reality for immigrants and to pretend that it was only cheapens the immigrant experience and minimizes the difficulties experienced by first-generation immigrants. Check your privilege, bro.
