I'll think about it...
Digifamily MARIA This song is very Senko no Ronde... I assume. It's not like I know the soundtrack well, it just is so stylistic that I have to imagine the rest of the songs take after it in some way. Very Mycro too, obviously. I don't like it as much as Lucky Charm, but I still find it fun and cool and I'm happy to listen to it. However, disclaimer: if you like this song you are BAD. Wow :33 was really good! Gave me hope this would develop into something special over, for example, all of the Kanako Itou VGMC songs we get every year. Too bad that was only ten seconds of style. The song is solid (much like the aforementioned Itou songs, usually), even noticeably better than average. I'm just a little fatigued of the style. Although... with the addition of the whistle on top of the plucked strings late in the song, it gets pretty close to where I was hoping it'd go. I'd probably be a big fan of a shorter version. Close match, christ. disclaimer: if you like this song you are BAD This is super cool. The instrument and melody that starts at :35 reminds me strongly of something, but I can't place it now. Nevertheless, this is the type of Mycro song I adore. It's got all sorts of weird shit going on, but in a way that, to me at least, is interesting and well put together. Sometimes these kinds of songs almost seem to be 'trying too hard' to me, and they just can't *click*. This, on the other hand, very much does. It's satisfying to hear all of this madness come together into something incredible. It's one of those songs (like Kimera II, for instance), that gets better every time you hear it indefinitely, even if it took a year to get from a 9.8 to a 9.9. Christ, it's so fucking good. Just as I knew THE KING would win my last ranking when I first heard it, this was destined for victory as well. Oh wait I've got it. It, oddly enough, reminds me of a segment of the 2017 International Wrestling Festival's gachi collab. Anyway, remember, that was 2018 NFUN talking. I've swerved much more into this kind of music since then. Maybe I liked it so much now that my good feelings echoed back in time, influencing how I felt about it in the past. Childhood's End. The end of my childhood of VGM listening. Anyways, a winner is you. Congratulations Mycro! I doubt this was the pick you were expecting to make it the farthest, but I also somehow doubt you're entirely surprised... Once again, thank you for showing me this song disclaimer: if you like this song you are BAD Sometimes a title perfectly encapsulates a song. When I hear this song, I think "Yes! We *do* all lift together!" I have no idea why, but I think of Mars in the Expanse when I hear this. Listening to this song makes me want to vote for it (in principle, at least; it had no chance in this particular match), but I feel it's... deceptive. Like it's being carried by a factor that isn't fair to base votes on. I guess I feel like it's "stealing" the emotions it's conveying, that it's unearned, whatever that means? Maybe the song is cheesy, so I like it, but it's also too cheesy, so I'm put off by it, but the more I think about it being cheesy the more I must like it, so I'm unable to conceptualize my feelings about this song without changing my feelings about the song so it's impossible for me to pinpoint anything specific about this. I wonder if there's a a psychology master's thesis lurking in there somewhere. disclaimer: if you like this song you are BAD I don't have anything to say about this one so here's my SEN writeup that I forgot I could post in its match. My original review: yep that's ar tonelico alright. The distorted screaming at 3:06 is neat My new review: Out of every song nominated that I haven't saved due to being part of a soundtrack that I've gone through, this is undoubtedly the one I've listened to the most. The flow chart for me listening to it is essentially "Did I think of this song? Yes -> listen to song". It's sublime. It's isn't common for me to connect emotionally with a song I have no context for. This absolutely did (to the point where writing that line made me tear up a little just by making me think about the emotions). I'm not sure I can even say why. I think the way its constructed, more than the lyrics, is extremely magnetic to me, kind of similar to how I haven't stopped thinking about XaaaCi in a year or how I get filled with energy at CIEL_NOSURGE's 'FAMNE'. I often tend to view things in a way akin to Freytag's Pyramid (without the inherent strict organization), of swells and trenches of energy or emotion or drama. I structure my lists in terms of 'movements' like this, for example, trying to build a story, of hope and disaster and determination, told without words. This song is the ideal of this kind of storytelling, and I'm not sure if I've ever heard another song that did anything like this in this way, or another song that I felt I could understand despite not knowing the lyrics (btw, having lyrics that aren't perfect is infinitely better than not having lyrics at all #newvideolink). Honestly, other hymmnos like EXSPHERE or the ones I mentioned earlier are the only examples I can think of. So what I'm saying here is that this song is basically goals There's another song that's well-known I think I can use as a point of comparison. I've mentioned, here and elsewhere, that songs that are very emotion-focused (for example, End of All) need something else to draw me, otherwise they'll just be complete misses. This manages to hit three marks. It's got an energy, it's interesting, and it's beautiful enough to get over the barrier and connect with me. The last trait is very rare. The former two are why I lot of PSO2 music, and *especially* Endeavour. You'd think I'd hate Endeavour from some of my other opinions. You'd be forgiven for thinking I'd hate this. But they both manage to succeed where most other pretenders failed. You might remember how hard I pushed for Endeavour to win in 14. Draw your own conclusions (ha ha, I gave them a tied Personal score but this is ahead because of Deserved. I'm leaving this comment here regardless) Oh cool, this is now specifically eligible. Needless to say, I will be nominating this disclaimer: if you like this song you are BAD Ah yes. MARIA. Arguably one of the most controversial songs in modern VGMC history. One side is angry that this song is three predictable chords repeated with nothing interesting added to spice up the song. The other side responds "BUT THOSE CHORDS ARE SO GOOD!" I've beaten this game, and to my utter disappointment, I really like the song now. I can't help myself. Somehow it's absurdly fitting for a final boss theme. Still, the song's simple enough I can access my pre-Yggdrasil opinions to vote IMPARTIALLY, which is important for this specific song because my positive feelings towards it are verifiably almost entirely context-dependent (I can give it a bonus for the audacity of being a final boss theme, though). Luckily, it doesn't take much for me to vote this over Space Mode, which is, like, "alright". Atelier Ayesha's a pretty solid game btw, go play it. disclaimer: if you like this song you are BAD I'm going to reiterate for the Supra people that this is, in fact, a final boss theme, in a game that has songs like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WuzCyTZJUbE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CEPlT4aM6mQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8R7MJA7dRsE --- Kneel... or you will be knelt ... DigiFamily Space Mode Tac Field pretty fun all the way through despite the repetitiveness. Kimi is also nice. I kinda feel like it's the better song, but I also wanna vote Tac Field. Hmm. Digifamily is okay. Very middle of the road song without much going on. Lift is more, uh, below the road. It's nice how it get darker near the end I guess. Something about Space Mode makes it feel like "what if Gurumin had good music" to me. It's very fun. MARIA is also good, as always. Playing Ayesha did not improve my opinion of it. We All Lift Together MARIA Uh oh all bottom votes that can't be good, the last time this happened I went 0-3. With triple vocals on Planet X/Cradle/Psycho Soldier...and one of them was against Senko no Ronde...oh god... Sanctuary-MA-RI-A feels like a song I should be tired of by now but I'm really not!!! Not just the chords, but the voice leading in the "soprano"/"top notes"/"melody" against that progression is really typical (I usually think of All of Me by John Legend). I could play the main parts of the song back in my head and it sounded pretty much exactly as I remembered it, but I still felt fully immersed and didn't get bored at all while listening! DigiFamily MARIA Tactical Field (9.2 - 7th place) / Kimi ga Tame Re:boot (7.6 - 35th place) DigiFamily (8.1 - 22nd place) / We All Lift Together (4.6 - 62nd place) Space Mode (7.0 - 43rd place) / MARIA (8.0 - 25th place) Seriously some of the trippiest rhythms I've heard in any vgm with the opening material with Tactical Field. It's like the melody tricks you into thinking those are quarter notes, but then because it doesn't fit right, it makes you think it can't be 4/4, but it IS in fact 4/4! (I think?) But I actually like the later sections even more. I love it when it gets more ambient, and just all the variety within it makes it a constantly fun listen. --- "Ah, a party! DigiFamily Space Mode -(i honestly don't know where to rank tactical field....yasuhisa watanabe is one of the artists i've liked the most consistently high up there for the longest period of time. he's remained in my top ~10 since 2008. it's hard for me to fairly judge something that's not only an old favorite, but a /consistent/ favorite, i haven't budged on my opinion on this song since it came out, no matter how many varieties my taste twisted through over time. i can't say that about many songs. yet i still don't even know if this is my favorite in the game! or if i like even lucky charm more?! WHO KNOWS. but this is the original "favorite senko no ronde song" for me ~~~~~ it's probably the most extreme example of "yack sound design is CRAZY @_@" for sure. no timbre is static, every synth thrown at you morphs into something else in some way, whether subtle, overt, gradual, abrupt. its one of the most inspiring pieces of music to me for that reason. but also i compositionally love it a ton! cool chords...(that's like an automatic in a yasuhisa watanabe song but yeah). the odd time bits are cool, they're simple enough to figure out (mostly 5/4 and 6/4 alternating in various patterns) but i like them for more than just that...the atmosphere those parts give off is COOl it feels like a MACHINE calculating its next move, and those eerie semi-doppler effect sounds whizzing in the background contribute to the wonderful busy and open feel SPACE COMPUTER ~~~~~ the relentless fullness of yack music (but senko no ronde in particular) is something i think i've found almost no one else who can achieve it in a way i identify with nearly as much. Moments like 2:00 just feel so good!! simultaneous energy and relaxing floatiness. It's so funny how many elements of this track are in Lucky Charm I promise not EVERY song by yasuhisa (yack) watanabe has the exact same sounds...! I actually hear a lot of "instruments that don't exist" in this song, like they're not there, I imagine extra chords timing themselves with the snare hits, but they're not really there when i actually look for them? It just feels like they are because this is so dense with content, and it still feels right, that's COOL. I could say so much more but i don't need to. I love this song and (like most senko no ronde series songs) it's managed to retain my high interest levels for a full decade without me ever growing bored of them somehow. )- -[good anim:E this is actually way nicer than i remember. When this was in noms i think i kinda glossed over it because i don't really find it memorable when it's presented to me in a deluge of hundreds of songs, but in a situation like this where i'm going out of my way to pay attention to it i'm pretty enthralled with the amount of cool things in the arrangement. the pitch bends on the flutey sound are so lively and nice!]- -{yack factory}- ----- -(i feel RESPONSIBLE for introducing aurora memoria to this community so i am really glad that there's a sizable contingent of people that like this stuff!!! the intro of this track always strikes me the most with the drilling repeated fake piano chord and kick. and hi-hat, and everything. It's just punchy, and exactly what I want from electronic drums in music. NEW jackhammer swing. DV-i is rivaled by only Yasuhisa Watanabe for me in terms of "favorite musician in terms of sound design" and i usually actually very slightly give the edge to dvi. big reason for that is a higher focus on these tight "precise" sounding scenarios, lots of punchiness and clarity to any given layer in a track. an even BIGGER reason for that is the focus on synths that are from the 80s and 90s though hahaha. they're used in ways that rival RYO YONEMITSU...i mean yack uses old synths too but LESS old. every sound in this is refined even further than its initial form too, like i recognize elements of some of these synths because that is one of the things i am the most nerdy about and dvi has attraction to some of the very exact same ones that I love to play with, but there's so much heavy manipulation to every sound it is BEAUTIFUL FUTURE WORLD. robots gba. I LOVE THE SOUNDS IN EVERY DVI SONG SO MUCH AND I WOULD BE DEAD IF DVI WAS NOT HERE TO SAVE MY LIFe. THANK YOU. this song also has really nice melodies that feel like optimistic tokyo cyber tubes and all the chords are so big!!!! I LOVE THe playing with that chimes sound at like 1:57 and stuff holy crap and the cool voice that gets cut off. WHIRL WIND i can't believe this is the first DV-i song somehow. this song is so PUNCHY)- -[folky stuff appeals to me and this is an example! The metallic clanks make a setting feel apparent, i always hahhhhhhhhhhhhhve a thing for those clearly considering how much i like Mining Melaoncholy -{DV-i}- ----- -(fm funk used to be the top thing on my list of favorite things because of "ubiktune" "soundshock" (albums) which is so funny that stinkbug has music on HA HA which is really good and sounds like this song. and then i listened to too much of it so now it is only my 20th favorite type of music instead of 1st favorite. still pretty good and this is a well done example of the style for sure; stinkbug as an artist always stuck out to me as the most personally melodically catchy example. Other fm funk types i liked for other reasons, but stinkbug it was always just "this is Catchy" which is actually not much like me to say, but i can't deny that's why i'm into his stuff!! his melodies just feel the perfect balance between soloistic expressiveness and emotional clarity. Certain teen titans flash games were a huge deal for me in like 2003 and i remember being a major fan of the music to them (even though it was mostly just short low quality loops), so i was overjoyed when i learned stinkbug (an artist i had already liked at the time) was doing music to one!! Felt perfect to learn there was a new teen titans flash game i could play and enjoy the music to, it was NOSTALGAIC)- -[i used to HATE maria but now i think it's pretty cool. it was the definition of my least favorite type of song back in the earlier contests (hated simple, slow music) but now i'm at worst just neutral to it. and honestly this is like, fun! the slow dramatic pace is really cool and even if the chord progression is one sort of cliche one i typically don't vibe with, there's a few things going on here to elevate it for me. Iike this certainly isn't /empty/ i really like the constant 16ths mallet perc hiding in the background, they drive it in a cool way. there are some elements i don't like but i don't dislike them That Much so i come out of this track fairly satisfied tbh these days. ]- -{i thought this match would be closer...it's still closer than you'd think, but i am doing a predictable ELECTRONIC PERSON vote instead of an unexpected vote for maria that i thought i might have}- ----- Tactical Field (7th/148) DigiFamily (12th/148) We All Lift Together (71st/148) Kimi ga Tame Re:boot (96th/148) Space Mode (97th/148) MARIA (117th/148) --- time ... DigiFamily MARIA they really overdid it on the vocal song additions in utawaremake. this one originally came from the anime adaptation of the first game to be fair. anyway, suara utaware songs are occasionally incredible, but here it's more like... an inferior LieN (chikayo fukuda vocal) song. not that that means it's bad, it's just a song that doesn't really enhance the experience (if anything, the flood of vocal themes at the end of the game detracts from the impact any of them would otherwise have individually, but i'm not trying to factor that in). also, sprite based utaware 1 versions > prelude. oh yeah also i love tactical field a lot maybe top 5 song in the contest to me (for now it's 2nd but there's definitely at least 2 more songs i'll be putting higher, maybe up to 6 more. top 10's all very close either way). senko great digifamily, like all aurora memoria songs, is definitely very cool. i think optical mode is noticeably cooler tho, not that they really try to go for the same feeling to be fair. meh 2.Tactical Field 20.Tidal Tempest 40.Kill Command 47.Painted Foothills 54.DigiFamily 57.Pioneer's Horizon 76.Valestein Castle 86.Normal Battle 90.MARIA 97.Kimi ga Tame Re:boot 110.Space Mode 114.We All Lift Together ... We All Lift Together Space Mode First two matches are solid. Incoming toxic rant regarding the third one, spoilered so people don't have to read it if they care about their blood pressure. It's about what you probably think it would be about. --- E come vivo? Vivo! ... Copied to Clipboard!

Tactical Field
We All Lift Together Space Mode at first I was like "what kind of sick fuck puts tactical field up against digifamily" but then I realised that I somehow failed to perceive Kimi ga Tame. Idk here's some more views for that polymetric manetric guy I hear he's pretty cool. I love all 6 songs, but the middle match was especially brutal. I love what digifamily does, but I think I appreciate we all lift's steady build up ability to just place me in a different world a wee bit more. "Wow a Teen Titans Go flash game with good music? Amazing." ~ most people, probably. ... Copied to Clipboard!

Kimi ga Tame
We All Lift Together Space Mode Tactical Mode is COOL! but Kimi ga Tame is equally cool imo, and i like the lyrics and instruments more, so oops sorry. digifamily be like "kick drum go brrrrrrrrrrr" actually there is definitely more to it than that but i just wanted to make that joek. anyway id rather listen to... uh... however to describe we all lift together. it has live instruments! oops i like live instruments. MARIA is zzzzz i have played ayesha and i think it is fine in context but it is very zzzzzz. space mode is not and i genuinely think it's cool. --- gau gau ... Copied to Clipboard!

Tactical Field
DigiFamily Space Mode Glad I decided to pop in the day Space Mode was being rated. I'll try and be here more frequently, I've just been working through some IRL stuff and trying to remember to check into these topics through the day. Probably doesn't help that I feel like I should do a major writeup every time. Should probably give myself some leeway there. Tactical Field rocks and is very much my kind of jam. This is a song I'll go out of my way to revisit. Kimi ga Tame is very nice too, it's very different so it's hard to compare. But Tactical Field just plays more into my personal tastes. DigiFamily is neat, has that sort of ambient airy feel that I'm always a fan of. No idea what the context of the song is but kinda reminds me of like an abandoned factory sort of deal, futuristic and kind of sad sounding. I like it. We All Lift Together was pretty cool toward the beginning but ngl the vocals are a bit corny for my taste, it's a cool concept but it's more of a novelty for me than something I'd willingly listen to. MARIA is aight, doesn't do very much for me. Space Mode is a certified banger. Again, such different songs to compare but you're gonna have a hard time pitting most songs up against Space Mode and expecting me to pick it. I remember finding Space Mode for the first time and thinking it was one of the coolest things ever, that such an amazing track could be found digging into Cartoon Network flash game soundtracks. It's emblematic of the significance of vgm as a whole, a soundtrack's ability to propel an unnoteworthy game into something worth talking about. Arguably one of the most controversial songs in modern VGMC history. This doesn't really feel true to me, tbqh. I guess part of it is I may be defining modern VGMC different than you such that MARIA didn't orginate there (VGMC8 was a long time ago!) and MARIA wasn't even in 2 of the past 3 contests in terms of modern. It just has some very vocal haters? And honestly I feel like less than a good number of other vocal songs, including Gust vocals! --- xp1337: Don't you wish there was a spell-checker that told you when you a word out? ...
