I feel like there are a few ways to look at it.
For presentation, I would go with Return of the Obra Dinn. The story is told in a way that can only really work in a video game to phenomenal results. A perfect showcase of video games as a distinct narrative form. Looking up my votes in that topic Kamikaze ran: +10 The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky SC Haven't played anything since that would change this and the order would only change slightly if at all. A bit surprised I didn't give anything to Persona 3 which was probably my #11, but maybe I decided competition was already fierce and that it was more noteworthy for its atmosphere and themes than for the story itself. --- I didn't do guru this year but azuarc can be in my sig anyways. ... I'm not entirely sure. I keep drifitng to Ao no Kiseki/Trails of Azure but it feels weird to pick that since for now I only watched a comprehensive LP for it.
Past that/games I've actually played... I'm thinking it's some kind of three-way deathmatch between Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth, Chaos;Child, and Trails in the Sky SC. Some HM shoutouts that haven't been mentioned yet: Ar nosurge and Pillars of Eternity. I wanted to like Chaos;Child more but that really was a case of the final 2-3 hours (of the first route) souring my impression of the whole thing. A lot of it was really good though.

Yeah I remember it taking a while. It was shortly after I played Umineko so it was short by comparison, so it didn't bother me.

It's just a wierd VN concept without mass appealing art (I like the art a lot but I get it's a little off) and basically no advertising, from a studio known for putting out dozens of shitty $3 generic RPGs a year. I know it would be popular if people played it but they just won't play it. It's a real shame.
