Figured it would be nice to have one of these with all the other topics happening these days. Just, a place to share an album or song that's been hitting you recently.

Been thinking of making it for a while, but I think my Song of the Year just dropped this morning and I almost made a topic for it specifically. Two of my favorite artists of the past decade, Sharon Van Etten and Angel Olsen, collaborated on a track that captures the best of both styles. It's a pandemic song that truly captures the adjustment back to normal life, first reflecting on the social anxieties that made certain elements easier ("Avoiding big crowds like I used to") before exploding into a need for human contact. Truly wonderful, and their voices go so well together.

Great song, that hook is really fantastic. The instrumentation is reminiscent of Born to Run at points which I don't know if it's a conscious choice or not but it definitely gives the song a free-sounding atmosphere.

Here's a little album I stumbled upon today. I've been on this J-pop/jazz fusion/city pop obsession for well over a year now and I was really intrigued by this album's genre of "Shibuya-kei" which seems to be more of an aesthetic genre than anything which begin as retail music but became a fusion of Western pop & orchestral styles. Pizzicato Five is one of the most well known bands in this style. It's a concept album based around NYC with mainly jazz soundscapes but also mixed in with some indie rock and lounge tracks with atmospheric chatter & occasionally spoken word pieces. It's really quite an eclectic album and I can see myself spinning this a lot in the future.

Thought it would be a cool idea for the topic to share anywhere you keep track of your music.

I personally use last.fm for about the past 2 years, it isn't perfect as sometimes the auto scrobbler messes up but in general it does the job just right for me without having to put too much effort in.

Shibuya-kei is an awesome category, . skimming this album maybe at some point (i've like, not ever listened to pizzicato five despite "liking shibuya-kei" lol

the artist i get into most associated with that is Cornelius, though i guess the stuff i look into stretches the line of definition a bit

This is a cool track. I love the more sound collage aspect of it, and the glitchiness of the vocals. It almost seems half-finished, not in a negative way, but more in a way like it's transitioning into something greater, with endless possibilities for the future. It's an interesting feeling and sound.

Real talk, I feel like my brain is sometimes incapable of processing lyrics in songs. It just hears singing as a, for lack of a better phrase, "mouth instrument". That's not to say I can't hear the words (although sometimes...), more that I sometimes fail to interpret the meaning, the intention, the story.

Best example I can think is this song I really enjoy by Jamiroquai:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmUxMUPL6Us

I just dug the the melancholic vibe of the song, especially in relation to the rest of the album. Finally, one day the lyrics sunk in and I was struck by just how monumentally depressing and sad the first half of the song is. Somehow my brain had just never put 2 and 2 together.

Anywaaaaay, I wanted to...spotlight...that Jessie Ware album again that was brought up in your other topic, What's Your Pleasure. I've listened to it a few times and I've enjoyed it. You're probably right that Spotlight:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kw56LGfrf4A&list=OLAK5uy_kwnL5gCyQ6OLq9k7QgozgaLiwa6OHflaA&index=2
is the stand out song.
Some of the beats really had me wanting to play Hotline Miami: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=msg38cxXqWQ&list=OLAK5uy_kwnL5gCyQ6OLq9k7QgozgaLiwa6OHflaA&index=7
And here's one from later in the album that stood out for me, Mirage (Don't Stop):

i also often don't process lyrics in songs, though i attribute that to english not being my native language.

Between what I have to assume are attention and audio processing disorders, I also have difficulty with lyrics. It's rare for me to pick up on the full meaning of a song just by listening unless the artist does a great job enunciating (and a lot of my favorite artists fall into that category). If I like a song, I'll usually find the lyrics and read along, but then my memory is good enough that I'll know it by heart. So, this typically means I have to like the music itself before caring about the words.

I'm also the type that watches movies with subtitles - I'm not deaf, but sometimes words feel shapeless to me. This might be why I watch so many foreign films without thinking about it.

Does anyone here listen to IDLES? I feel like my brain's been cycling through their discography the past couple days. The last few years have been excellent for punk and post-punk.

Here's a few favorites to introduce anyone interested

Those IDLES videos are pretty catchy, same vibe as Protomartyr. The second one especially

Does anyone listen to Cloudkicker? I keep going back to his album from last year "Solitude", just an excellent heavy guitar album - all instrumental https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7zhvUDrOy4

Been reading Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner and just realized she released her third album under Japanese Breakfast today - it was very good.

Now I'm onto Wolf Alice's new album, which is getting phenomenal reviews.

Oh hey, I'm a bit late to the conversation, but vocals are a bit of a thing for me as well. In that I -really- do not like them. I'm someone that tends to sometimes mishear what's being said, so I've never really been all that good at processing lyrics in music. But sometimes I feel like, whenever vocals come up in music some part of me forcibly tries to process them anyway, at the cost of being able to enjoy the music. As if parts of me that would be enjoying the music are instead forced into being used more into trying to understand what's being said. Dunno if that's actually the case, but the existence of vocals definitely block out my enjoyment of songs >99% of the time, so I essentially just want to listen to instrumental pieces.

Though another part of the thing is, a huge part of what I personally love in music is like, letting the sounds kinda bring me into another world away from this reality. So I'll love weird unnatural, electronic synth sounds over traditional orchestral instrumentations, but that's yet another case against vocals because hearing a person talk would only bring me back to earth when I'd prefer to explore elsewhere. But I still won't like songs that use heavily edited/synthesized lyrics either, so there's more to it than just that.

I can agree with a lot of this. Non-lyrical songs (for me that's typically EDM type stuff) has a way of "unwrapping the knots in my brain" (as I like to think about it). I don't get stuck trying to concentrate on the lyrics, oftentimes leading me to frustration, and instead just relax and feel the music.

I've been listening to Porter Robinson's new album a lot lately. I like it. I have no experience with his previous work, but I should probably check it out. Unfold might be my current favorite track off the album.
