One of the worst takes of all time was Zach Lowe repeatedly implying that the only people who hate Patrick Beverly were bitter Thunder fans

any fan of basketball should hate patbev, yeah. he's zazaesque.

This is a shame cause Lowe is one of my favorite espn people, but yeah that's a bad take

Honestly, I was rooting for the clippers, but after just seeing the patbev shove from last night, as if his antics from the game prior weren't enough, that did it for me.

I'm glad they lost.

Guys like him make sports more fun. The dudes you hate on other teams but love them on your team. Draymond, Beverley, Cortland Finnegan, Rodman, Tie Domi, Suh, the list goes on.

Kyle Lowry is the biggest one of these currently for me. I loathe the dude because of the dirty side of his game but I absolutely get why you would love him on your team.

I'm kinda conflicted because I still think Chris Paul is a dirty player, but I can't deny how great he is in spite of that and I don't like the "how good could he be when he's never won anything" take because it's lazy.

Agreed on the last part, but you do need to at least make the finals. You dont have to win to be all-time, but you have to get there.
So who is the greatest player to never make the finals now? Steve Nash? George Gervin?

Rose is probably going to be the biggest "What could have been" in NBA history, or at least a contender for it. And as long as he's okay to play he may still find his way onto a contender again.

Much of which is in the East. I take a lot of those wins with a grain of salt.

I mean, a lot of those wins were against the Big Three Heat, so I don't.

nash and rose are two of the least deserving mvps in history so it makes sense

i think the most deserving MVPs actually made the finals the same season they were voted MVP - and that's actually a majority of them, at least that i can think of in recent memory

(edit) thinking about it, all the most recent MVPs have failed to make the finals. i guess i'm thinking of like curry, duncan, shaq, kobe, lebron, and jordan. they tended to accrue MVPs during their teams' best years.

"best player on the best team" players like rose/giannis/harden obviously are going to win these awards less, and "best player on an ok team" guys like westbrook/jokic are gonna have an almost impossible time making it to the finals

and to amend my point even further - i guess league MVPs sometimes (often?) come before the true team success, and sometimes after, so those MVPs can become more legitimized in hindsight

if westbrook (lol) were to somehow lead his next team - let's say he somehow gets traded for kyrie, KD gets old overnight, and westbrook leads the nets to the title and wins FMVP - that would do a lot for legitimizing his 2017 trophy. similarly, i don't think of giannis as a bust yet; if he were somehow to come back and win games 6 and 7 and then make a good showing vs the suns, that would definitely legitimize his '19 and '20 trophies more

but yeah, MJ was MVP before he made the finals, and so was lebron, so there's time for all these young'uns

also I think Westbrook can be a key contributor to a championship team because he's changed his game since KD left (and arguably could've won a title anyway if they don't blow that 3-1 lead to the Warriors)

It's just a matter if he can somehow find himself on a legit contender, which he hasn't had since KD left. I don't know that he needs it to legitimize his MVP since the other guy who would've won it was Harden, whose playoff woes are well documented.

So Cole Anthony confirmed he wasn't invited to the US Select team after Magic fans had speculated that he turned down the invite. Which sounds kind of whatever but Josh Magette was selected who is a 30+ year old G-league journeyman currently playing in Turkey. I only know who he is because he was on a two way contract with the Magic 2 seasons ago and we had memes about him on the podcast

2021 Finals will be the first since 1983 to not feature a player who was at some point a teammate of Shaq's.

Impressive, but it's got nothing on the (still active and could be for another decade) Jaromir Jagr teammate in the Stanley Cup since 1980 streak!

relegate the blazers to the g league if they ever made that trade

(I get where you're coming from though if Lillard made it clear he was leaving and they were desperate to get something instead of nothing but even then...!)
