and to amend my point even further - i guess league MVPs sometimes (often?) come before the true team success, and sometimes after, so those MVPs can become more legitimized in hindsight

if westbrook (lol) were to somehow lead his next team - let's say he somehow gets traded for kyrie, KD gets old overnight, and westbrook leads the nets to the title and wins FMVP - that would do a lot for legitimizing his 2017 trophy. similarly, i don't think of giannis as a bust yet; if he were somehow to come back and win games 6 and 7 and then make a good showing vs the suns, that would definitely legitimize his '19 and '20 trophies more

but yeah, MJ was MVP before he made the finals, and so was lebron, so there's time for all these young'uns
