You're still going to be at significantly higher risk unless you're already vaccinated yourself. The masks have always been better for keeping people from spreading the virus more than they have been protecting you from it.

Personally, I think they dropped the requirement way too early - there are still millions of people who haven't been able to get vaccinated yet (not counting the idiots who are deliberately refusing to), who are potentially getting fucked over by this. In the US alone we've only really vaccinated about 1/3rd of the population (and most people probably aren't going to process the idea that it still takes about two weeks after your last shot to be fully protected, and will take their mask off the day after their shot).

Allowing people to decide on their own recognizance whether or not they're "safe" is a terrible idea, because people in general are stupid and terrible.

Good. At a certain point everyone that wants to be vaccinated will be. If you still want to wear a mask you are free to do so, but if youre vaccinated you really dont need to.

The government cant say we didnt warn you. They gave people ample amount of time to get a vaccine for free. my walgreens is just sitting on stacks of pfizer vaccines and is offering it to any walk ins.

America wasnt made to be shutdown. Biden did his part. Time for the people to start making some plays and get back to work

Not really a valid argument, as there's still plenty of places where shortages exist and people are having trouble getting appointments, let alone walk-ins.

Again, it's kind of shitty policy to arbitrarily decide that we've successfully vaccinated 1/3rd of the population so that's good enough and we can stop giving a shit. Especially when vaccines have only been open to the entire population (as opposed to high-risk or older people) for about the last month or so (if I'd gotten vaccinated the instant I was eligible, I still wouldn't technically be fully protected right now).

I wonder what plans they have for determining whether or not somebody is vaccinated. Probably none, which is why this is a terrible idea.

I don't think you can ask for medical records like that.

I'm sure some sort of legislation will have emerged by the time this is all over and done with to create an exception for it. Of course, by the time such legislation actually comes through, it'll probably be a moot point, but setting some kind of precedent isn't a bad idea.

Oh sure, but it's also a bad precedent to ignore laws for a rule that's (probably) being worked on.

It is. Really, this whole announcement has been rather thoroughly botched. Legislation should have been in place to handle mask enforcement before it was announced that they weren't needed for certain things anymore. For that matter, legislation should have been prepared for this months ago, since it was blatantly obvious that it was coming eventually.

Target announcing this? Or the CDC? I'm talking mostly about the CDC saying vaccinated people don't need masks, which I'm sure is scientifically sound (and generally good news, since there had been some question about it), but was announced very irresponsibly due to how people are inevitably going to react to and abuse it. It's a given that major businesses will be updating their policies accordingly, largely erring on the side of letting people go maskless because they know many of their customers have been desperately salivating for this day since the day the masks went on. For Target, yeah, it's a PR move more than anything else.

"Target has dropped its mask requirement for fully vaccinated customers, joining with Walmart, Trader Joe's, Starbucks, Costco and other businesses."

First paragraph of the article. They're among the first, certainly, but they're not exactly setting a trend. It's also really a given that, once one major business does it, everyone else will follow suit due to the competitive disadvantage of sticking to the requirement.

I'm honestly not sure how much the masks did in the first place. The whole thing felt more like "Oh, put this on and you're good to get back to work!" than any real safety measure.

100% not where I live. Even after it became provincial law, mask wearing never went above 75%. Absolutely embarrassing.

The only store that enforced it was a liquor store.
