Balthier's about the only one who actually has worthwhile personality (and that only because he's the "Han Solo" of the piece). Ashe and Basch may be plot motivators, but they overplay "stoic" to the point of boredom, and don't ever really feel like the main characters. As much as some people will lean into the "Vaan's not the main character!" argument, it doesn't really wash. As the viewpoint character, he IS the character who has the most profound effect on how the audience sees the narrative. If your viewpoint character is an annoying little shit, it detracts from everything. If your viewpoint character is the least interesting character in the entire setting, it makes the entire story (and everyone in it) seem less interesting by proxy. Though I wasn't necessarily just thinking of the core characters. Most of the supporting cast and antagonists are utterly forgettable as well (except for the ones that are just plain annoying/irritating).
