Im trying it out starting Monday. Im doing it to cleanse my body and hope I dont lose too much weight because Im already thin. I heard its best to do these with groups of people. I have no experience fasting but think I can do it.

So why not do it in a healthy way where you just eat healthy and drink water

This sounds incredibly unhealthy if you're already underweight, not to mention a full week is probably overkill

Oh you mean eat nothing for seven days? That's not a good idea.

Fasting is beneficial, sure, but not for that long. When people talk about fasting they mean like 24hrs.

Cleanse is such a bad and dangerous term. Your body naturally gets rid of the shit thats not supposed to be in it. Doing a water fast is not going to do...whatever you think its going to do. Especially a full week.

Go consult your doctor.

They can be, for some people, in some circumstances, with proper guidance.

For someone with a junk diet to just go cold turkey on food would be like deciding that you want to be a swimmer and start your training by swimming in the arctic. It is going to be a shock to your system, and you have a higher risk of negative consequences.

If you are locked in on a fasting approach, I would research intermittent fasting and work on shifting your diet slowly to something with less carbohydrates and perhaps more fiber and fat.

Drinking nothing but water for 7 days sounds like a great way to end up in the hospital. At the very least take some vitamins or something.

@MajinZidane can we get the school nurse's opinion on 7-day fasts?

What exactly are you trying to "cleanse" out of your body? I wouldn't try to remove anything from the inside of my body without some understanding of what it is. Can you name the specific things you want to remove from your body? Your body can tolerate some level of random chemicals in it. Your liver and kidneys are the organs responsible for cleansing you. Starving them is not going to help them.

Like you know how you're supposed to eat before a test? You're dumber when you're hungry. You will feel like a zombie almost the whole time, and probably won't fully recover for days afterwards. Bad idea. Ask your doctor.

It is a red flag that you said this. It really sounds like your problems aren't physical. It sounds like you have a body image problem and it's going to manifest as an eating disorder. People are very suggestible and if they believe that their diet should make them feel like crap, it will.

Most people I've known to do this have only done it for like three days and still lost a substantial amount of weight. A week seems really overkill.

Anyway, I've been satisfied with my rate of weight loss (I recently got into the "normal" range according to the BMI chart for the first time since high school/maybe early college) and have begun to build muscle. I also have a fairly physically demanding job that requires a decent amount of protein intake, so I'm gonna pass on this one.

Sure! I'm not a nurse, though.

I think the trend over the last few years with "cleanses" is a bunch of buzz words meant to draw people in. There can be positive effects to them, but anything you read talking about "toxins" and the like is just more buzz words. Calorie restriction, cutting out carbs/sugar, or feeling good about the achievement/discipline you demonstrated are more positively impactful on your overall health.

I wouldn't recommend a 7-day water fast. All conventional evidence supports lifestyle change over something like this. Will you lose weight? Yes. But it isn't sustainable and it is possibly risky on your body.

Intermittent fasting is legit, tho. If you really want to try this, just do a 24 hour water fast. If you are really dead-set on attempting a multi-day water fast, you should supplement with appropriate vitamins and electrolytes and should also build up towards it with multiple shorter duration water fasts first. But I still think you're just better off with IF and lifestyle change.

Thanks for the info. That all makes sense and Im not going to do seven days. But Im also going to stick with just water.

Update!

I decided to start today. My last meal was yesterday night around 930pm. Im currently very hungry but Ive been hydrating all day. So much that Ive gone to the bathroom at least 10 times. I also went for a 1.5 mile walk as to not overexert myself yet do some type of physical activity.

I am thinking that tomorrow will be easier since I have work. Im hoping that will keep me occupied more since my schedule will be more structured. If I can get past tomorrow, I am confident I can make it to at least three full days.

Please resume eating a normal amount of food when you wake up! This really seems like a cry for help and everyone is telling you to stop. Everyone is saying to max out at 24 hours.

I'm serious that it sounds like you have body image issues. You'll be happier in the long run if you learn to accept your body as is, especially since you're a totally normal weight already and it doesn't sound like you need to change anything.

Thinking you wanna lose 10 pounds or something isn't inherently a problem. I sometimes gain enough weight that I go "hm, I should lose this." And then I eat less for a while until I like what I see in the mirror and feel when I touch my stomach. But I don't overdo it to the degree that a whole topic of people tells me for days that I'm gonna hurt myself. I accept that it'll take a little while and that's fine. And that I might have temporary setbacks, because that's the cost of eating what I want in the moment, and that's fine.

Your diet shouldn't take up this much of your mental real estate except for really specialized reasons (you're dangerously obese, you're an athlete, you're an actor who needs to fit in a specific role, etc). You should really talk to someone in real life about why you are feeling this way.

48 hours is fine to do a body reset on your hunger. After 48 hours, eating a small amount will make you feel full. Which is the point of something like this. 7 days is overboard.
