Board 8 > Huh, just recently found out that my gf's niece is a racist

I've heard her say the n word before, but she just barely got out of HS when I first met her, and people in HS think it's cool to say that word. Didn't think too much of it. She's also a big Trump supporter, but not all Trump supporters are necessarily racist, so I didn't really think much on that either.(I mean, fuck Trump supporters obviously, but she's pretty much family, so w/e)

Then a few days ago at a family gathering, we're talking about horror movies, and I bring up Get Out. She says she didn't like it, and when I ask why she didn't, she goes on and on about how it's black orientated, and how basically every black focused movies suck because black people suck, etc... basically like a 5 minute straight rant about how black people suck.

Family gatherings are going to suck now, I guess I'm just going to do my best about ignoring her, but I fucking hate racist people.

I will never defend the use of the word, but sometimes kids want to be edgy and they think that's the best way of going about it, not realizing that it is incredibly racist. You'd hope by calling them out that they realize that they're stupid and stop saying it.

not necessarily true. At least when I was in high school, rap was really big and a lot of people idolized artists who used that word, so they thought it was cool. Not saying that it's right to say it but I don't think you have to be racist to think it sounds cool (depending on the way it's being used obv)

there were almost no black people at my school

sometimes asian people would refer to each other with the soft n-word like you see them do in pulp fiction or whatever. it was never used to refer to any actual black people.

it was inappropriate (as was using "gay" as an insult), but they tell you that saying "fuck" is inappropriate too, and that's obviously actually socially acceptable

that said a trump supporter who uses the n-word is way likelier to be a person who actually hates black people

I don't really know about her dad, since he's been a druggie since he was a teen, and very hard to talk to because of it, but her mom is pretty racist as well. She's also very ignorant about the world and how social programs work, which is worrying because she's a teacher's aid right now, and almost ready to become a teacher.

That won't work at all, she's one of those typical Trump supporters that think she knows everything, and that she's right about everything.

BTW, I'm sure most of you are thinking that my gf and her family are white, but the whole family is Mexican. This is what growing up in Texas does to people.

When I was in High School in the early 2000s, the -a version was used by basically everyone, and my school was only 50% white at best.

I have a memory of someone saying sup -a to this new white kid and he was like Im not black, then all the black kids roasted him for being a nerd.

Yeah, my high school was less than 50% white, which is already higher than a lot of schools in the area of Toronto that I live in, and the soft -a was something a lot of people used to mean friend or when rapping along to music. This was '08-'12 and even by the end of that time it was going out of style as more people realized that it wasn't cool, regardless of whether other kids were upset about it or not.

Nowadays though, that shit ain't flying in schools, and rightfully so, at least in my experience.

the a version of the n word was used heavily when I was in HS, the few white kids we hung out with never used it but all the black/spanish/asian kids used the a version of the word

the f word homosexual slur was also thrown around a lot

this was way before social media though

in my experience all the white people who said the n word regularly in high school were people with a lot of black friends, or the non-racist ones. Also literally everyone else said it in some form or another as a joke or punchline because it's funny in the way 16 year olds like to be funny.

I grew up in chicago though and it was p diverse and non-racist in my area. Going to different states taught me more segregated places treat the word differently

I graduated high school in 2004, and it was definitely a word lots of people used back then because as a teenager saying or doing taboo things is exciting. I've personally never been a fan of the word once I learned where it came from, but it didn't stop others from using it.

Half the people in my private southern highschool said it. The half that didn't knew that it was super racist and ****ed to say. The half that did would do it maliciously because they were actively raised to continue the racist views of their parents.
