Potentially best game ever made.

They essentially made an open world game with an N64 game on a tiny budget.

This is proof that once you have a great engine you should just make more games using it. BOTW 2 doesn't need to change anything. Just add to the first one in positive ways and you've got a money printer.

Is that really so unusual for the time period, though? The number of people seems fairly normal, and "about a year" sounds like a normal-ish amount of dev time.

I agree with this. It's why with the qualifier it takes it over the top imo.

I can't think of any games that did what it did before it and plenty that have at least tried to do what it did after.

Oh easily Resident Evil 6 by this metric. I believe it had around a thousand people working on if, a gigantic budget, and it came out as a much worse game as well as a huge disappointment.

OK 'Pioneered' was the wrong word, but Cave Story popularised and set the standards for indies and one-person games that followed, I think it's worth a mention given the criteria. But yeah this is irrelevant because:

I beat Majora's Mask on release and have never made it out of Clock Town since(Not entirely true I've made it out to the field a few times).

I know its a lot of fun once it opens up but the intro sequence is slow and painful.

Mega Man 7 was made in 3 months.

Considering it had all new sprites that's pretty impressive even for a Mega Man game. Heck Mighty No. 9 took like 3 years and it still felt rushed compared to MM7.

What happened with its development?

After working with Miyamoto for 3 years to make Ocarina of Time they started work on Ura Zelda/Master Quest content for the 64DD.

Aonuma wanted to do a new game though and not just a remixed OoT so Miyamoto told him he could if he could finish it in only one year

so he did and we got Majora's Mask.

otherwise, it's a pain in the ass to have to re-execute all of the puzzles you just did because you started whatever you were working on too late in the cycle

7 isn't close to the worst Mega Man game. Yeah the big sprites and less responsive controls suck but the rest of the game is great.

2Gameboy, X6, X7, Star Force 2 and Battle Chip Challenge are waaaaay worse Mega Man games, and that's not even including the DoS or Game Gear games.

Heck MM7 isn't the only game guilty of huge sprites, MM&B and the Zero games all have the screen crunch issue as well.

Knowing how game development works I definitely agree with this. It's impressive technically but the craziest achievement is the design. It's so damn complicated and cohesive, which is something you usually see on games that have a lot of calendar time (regardless of budget or # of devs).

There's checkpoints built in to every pre-dungeon puzzle and mid-dungeon checkpoints too. You only ever have to redo the last like 10 minutes (for main path things... some side stuff can require a lot of redo)

Yeah it's so cool how you can redo a dungeon from scratch but now with the key item that lets you bypass half of it.

Replaying this on the DS and just spending time farming rupees from the takkuri while waiting for the road to the ranch to open was a lot of fun. I remember getting recked by that thing SO HARD when I was younger.

8 has some real dumb shit and terrible design that's worse than 7's worst parts, but 7 has a general badness to it that permeates every aspect. 7 would be a better game without the giant MM sprite, but it has that, and the game's ruined.
