i do find it hard to see how they know the cuttlefish (or other animals) knows it'll get something better, but i'm not a scientist

Naw, delay discounting can be measured really well, across species too.

Just invoking the marshmallow test is silly since it's one of those typical social psychology manipulations where the wow factor comes from a small manipulation having a large impact. Like, a single trial effect prediction life outcomes 20 years later or whatever? You should be pretty skeptical to begin with, because a single measurement of anything is going to be...pretty much noise?

Anyway, long story short, the mashmallow study predicted SES from SES.
