Which one?

Acknowledging first and foremost that we are still in the midst of the pandemic and that my intention is not to imply that "the worst is over" or anything hubristic like that...

I'm writing an article about how gaming has changed due to Covid and want your thoughts.

My votes for New Horizons due to the kismet timing of it all. But I think Death Stranding has a strong claim, even though it came out months before it theoretically started spreading. The sheer annoyance of Kojima being prophetic strikes again.

What game will you look at/play in the future that will "transport" you back to quarantine?

Even though I haven't played it, it's definitely Animal Crossing. I know dozens of people who bought a Switch just for that game last March/April and have put 500+ hours in.

Among Us and Jackbox 7 definitely saw increased playerbases and hype due to quarantine but with less impact, and they certainly didn't sell PCs.

The rest just happened to be released during the pandemic and would have gotten pretty much the same amount of attention regardless.

My PERSONAL answer is Murder By Numbers, as that was what I was playing when everything started to go down, and I will never not associate it with that time. But the real answer is Animal Crossing.

Personally its Animal Crossing, more widely culturally its Among Us.
I would have played AC and it would have been reasonably popular regardless of whether or not there was a pandemic. Among Us straight up would not be a known thing without Covid.

Animal Crossing definitely. I think it made life feel more normal again for a lot of people. On the same token Doom Eternal would be a good game to cross-examine since it was also a huge game for the time with a complete opposite tone.

I think it's also important to look at the way BRs like Fortnite and Warzone redefined social spaces, especially Fortnite with virtual concerts like Travis Scott drawing huge numbers that shattered records.

I definitely thought about putting a battle royale on here, like Fortnite or PUBG, but since I don't play those games I didn't really know which one to list.

Voted Animal Crossing: NH but on further thought it's probably Among Us for me.

Also Spelunky 2 although it's nowhere near as widespread as anything listed here.

Honestly it's crazy. I never actually played much of New Horizons yet played a ton of Among Us

Despite that I still voted for Animal Crossing, I guess it really did just have that much of a cultural impact

PUBG doesn't have much relevancy anymore. Fortnite definitely still rules the roost, the past year alone they had Travis Scott, massive in-game lore events including one a crossover with Avengers & Galactus, weekly virtual concerts, and even movie showings like Tenet and other Nolan films.

For those of us voting AC - does this affect your enjoyment of it at all? Does anyone not want to play it because it feels "too March 2020" for you? Did anyone drop it during the pandemic and not want to come back due to its association to quarantine/stress?

Among Us is MUCH more associated with the pandemic for me. You can't get together to hang out with people, but you could play Among Us online to still get some social interaction.

I'll go as far to say I can't even imagine a game that's not primarily multiplayer being more associated with the pandemic to me. The biggest lifestyle change with the pandemic one year ago was being stuck at home, unable to spend time in person with friends and loved ones. The only way to get any social interaction was through the internet.

No this is a fine answer. I'm not only looking for popular games that came out during quarantine but also games that "feel" very Covid quarantine, hence the DS inclusion.
