Why is this kid trending on Twitter every single day?

Why do I see some dire post with a billion comments at #1 and then I actually look at it and it's some commentor apologizing for shit talking this Minecraft dude?

Minecraft speedrunner who blew up once everyone rediscovered Minecraft at the start of lockdown, and then had people accuse him of cheating.

some of his Minecraft videos are alright where they're playing with different types of weird mods, but his popularity has blown up disproportionately to the quality of the videos

I originally heard about him through Dunkey, then MatPat covered his cheating in MC, and then he covered his SMP server. But that's it, and I still don't understand why he's mega popular.

He's like a top 5 youtuber in terms of subscribers or something. He's super rich from this, and then turns around uses that money to do crazy charity stuff. It's pretty easy to get advertisers to give you heaps of money when you can guarantee the video will hit 10+ million views >_>

I'm subbed to him to watch his charity stuff - his competitions with his friends where he makes them do ridiculous stuff to win cars or like 50k cash bore me but that's definitely meant for a younger audience. The charity stuff is legit heartwarming.

My understanding, and this is from never playing it just kind of absorbing info over the years, is that there is an almost final 'boss' of minecraft (unique monster) that is buried as deep into the game as possible. Speed running it is routing the best way to get the materials and weapons you need to access it and kill it

Also no idea what sort of restrictions they have on the world that's generated but I imagine there is some element of luck

The dragon is not even really hidden. It's just very RNG to get to it quickly.

There are 2 minecraft speedruns one is done on the same map seed so everything is in the same place and the other is random. From what I understand the general community has latched onto everything being on the same seed. Even so, the speedrun basically relies on you using and giving items to find other items or places that don't have 100% success rates while moving as fast as possible. To say there is some element of luck in a minecraft run is an understatement.

The issue with Dream was that his luck was so absurdly high during his run that it was deemed to be basically impossible. If you want to know the odds, math was done and it came out to 1 in 2 x 10^22 chance of it happening.

this isn't about complaining about luck - RNG is a major factor in speedrunning in general so that would indeed be pointless. there's a difference between having luck and having an amount of luck that's practically impossible.

There's is a difference between being lucky and being so lucky across multiple runs that it's a mathematical fact that cheating occurred.

The dude was playing a Modded version of Minecraft to alter the drop rates of items and trying to pass it off as vanilla.

If he wanted to get away with it then he should have put in work doing many hours of legit attempts and then used the modded version of the drop tables for one single attempt and then go back to legit attempts. And then probably maintain a ratio of one cheated attempt for every thirty legit attempts to dilute the observable-ness of the manipulated RNG.

Instead he had several full streams of cheated attempts. And so the impossible-ness of his luck was more conclusively proven by the aggregate result of many consecutive cheated attempts.

The initial estimation of the odds of his run happening were about the same as winning one of the billion dollar mega millions jackpots with one ticket... and then buying another ticket and doing it again for the next one

there's "luck", there's "straining the bounds of credibility", and then there's this. With those numbers, if people completed one billion Minecraft speedruns in total, there'd still be only a one in six hundred thousand chance of somebody having gotten that lucky, about as likely as getting a random royal flush

You can't, really. We still don't know with 100% certainty that Dream cheated. You just have to kinda trust people, while simultaneously understanding that the longer a competition goes on the higher the probability that the absolute best performance of all time will have been gotten by cheating.

I'm not sure that they do anything currently. In theory they could have someone show their minecraft installation folders before and after attempts so you could see any files that aren't supposed to be there? And show themselves launching the exe from that folder? Or they could get one of those Easy Anti-Cheat applications going like what fall guys had to use after cheating was rampant. I'm really not sure.
