Trying to use a space heater to heat the area I'm in was a mistake, lol. My apartment is already in the mid 60s.

I might go in my car if I don't get power back soon

Zoinks. Good luck. Is your utility company shutting people off bc they're out of natural gas? Or is it just a regular power outage?

Not sure about Cable's neck of the woods but in North TX they're doing rolling power outages to take pressure off the grid, problem is the outages are lasting much longer than reported they would (15 mins to an hour-ish)

... wait, Texas' infrastructure is so garbage that it can't support people heating their homes?

I think Texas just isn't equipped for the cold in general. There was that 70-car pile-up a few days back because there was 1/8th inch of snow on the ground. People don't know how to handle it. It seems every winter there's an embarrassing story about a southern state coming to a complete standstill because a minor snow flurry sends everyone into a panic.

The nosedive is when the started doing the rolling blackouts. Apparently the grid needs 3mw in reserve to remain functional. The company was claiming that people would only be without power for 10-20min at a time, but apparently people are going without power for hours, this isn't counting the actual blackouts from lines down and whatnot

Kansas is getting fucked, lost power at 2 AM.

well I didnt realize the heat pump shouldnt be turned on immediately after a power outage that lasts longer then 30 minutes (it was roughly 3 hour outage) and fell asleep before the power came back on, I guess if you dont want for the refrigerant to thaw after that it can do something called coolant slugging so really hoping the power outage wasnt a $1,500 issue despite not being my fault and not understanding that mechanism of the heat pump. Our heating coil is dog shit and only getting us to about 64 degrees on emergency heat mode.

its a very stressful day but we are all huddled in a room with an electric heater so we are at least warm in one part of the house.

Well for one, Texas has its own electrical grid separate from the rest of the country.

Since basically the whole state is affected by the cold snap, there's nowhere we can draw relief from grid-wise.

Huh... didn't know that, although I have to assume that the state's infrastructure is still sub-par. When cold snaps hit entire regions up north, every state is still drawing more power than usual.

If they are closed I'm going to start a fire in the backyard. This shit ain't cool. No pun intended

It still surprises me that people don't have propane heaters or even generators (Less so gens since they are far more expensive) in case of emergency. There could be any multitude of reasons power goes out during the winter not just a storm

Or a pellet stove.

As someone who is used to the power company being horrible at getting power back up, I am just used to being ready for not having power for days. I like my conveniences.

This is a good point. I would expect people in texas to have lots of propane and propane accessories.

Decided to go for a drive since I can't do much for work with the power going on and off. I've never seen snow like this in central Texas and I've never driven in snow, so I figured I'd do it just for the experience.
  • My car has AWD and handled it much better than a couple cars I saw with RWD.
  • I still slid a little bit when taking turns a little too fast, but the car quickly regained traction.
  • Someone's Escalade got stuck in the snow. I helped them get out.
  • They're cutting power to the Tesla supercharging stations as part of the rolling outages, too, so I had only a little luck getting my car to charge faster

So apparently the only parts of the Omaha area to experience the scheduled outage were Old Town Bellevue (100 year old houses mostly owned by old and/or lower class people struggling to get by) and South Omaha (largely minority community)

Cant be shutting off the McMansions in West O for an hour...

PSO was talking about rolling blackouts here in OK, but apparently called it off because

Tonight should be the last of the real cold here, and maybe Thursday night. Hopefully the 2nd round of snow they're saying is coming isn't too bad.

Hope y'all stay safe
