How do you go about shading the shadows? You just imagine where the source of light comes from and then shade according to the angles of the characters clothing/hair ect?

Yeah that's pretty much it. Depending on how I'm coloring and the figure I might start with the shadows first.

For that one specifically I imagined a candle just out of frame in front of her on the right side.

Interesting, thanks thats what I always thought, but I usually mess up the technique and it looks unnatural. I'll go back to it later.

I tried to draw an Ascian from FF14 but totally failed. Kinda disheartening but I'll keep trying.

I decided to try a little harder at really learning, and not just trying to get better without methodology. One of the first steps is some upside down image copying, because its easier to disassociate from what you think the image should look like (or something like that). Its not perfect, but its always better than you think itll be when youre doing it. It also forces me to take it slow, which I often have trouble doing. I have another one (besides the starter one), but Im a bit iffy on posting it. I might do a few more of these types of things while waiting for drawing materials to come in.

Its true in this instance I wasnt copying a line drawing, but I dont think that matters too much. I started from the legs, and I think problems really began at the arms. You can tell the left shoulder (my left) might be a bit too far away. I guess this is where disassociation (or lack of) of the mind and previous knowledge comes into play.

The head might actually be the worst bit, because I leaned into the fact I had made a mistake with the arm. The right hand is weird in part because of the messed up arms. Honestly, the legs look short too, but the character is short and the shot is actually at a bit of an angle. So perhaps my mistakes were really just from a lack of carefulness, and were ever present. Gives me something to think about while I wait for my new stuff.

Damn dude you're drawings are good! Probably better than mine too. Theres something about the style that draws me in. Good work.

I drew a cape and a cloak, then instantly messed up the creases and fold. Gonna keep trying on that. In other news, my younger cousin is amazing at drawing, makes me proud.

Lol it's all good I can see how it can look like a finger. The perspective of her fist is a bit off anyway. I should've angled it more to the left instead of head-on. At this point though it was more of a concept drawing of the character.

Hey I made a fist and my hand has that exact same shape on the side so it is perfect imo. I just hadnt looked at my own fist in a while, and apparently forgot about that bit of side palm.

What are you using to create these? As inwhat app, what device(s), and what peripherals (like stylus/Apple pen/etc)?

Wacom Drawing Tablet on my laptop. Software used for this exercise is manga studio i think.
