Worth playing for someone only occasionally into JRPGs?

And is it like Final Fantasy where each game is in its own world? Cause I havent played a game in the series before and dont really know much about it

Each game in Dragon Quest is standalone for the most part (the first three take place in the same timeline but you can play them standalone). Dragon Quest is kinda like JRPG comfort food: you know what you're going to get, they don't stray too far from their roots, and it's not known for complex or dramatic stories like Final Fantasy is. XI gets recommended in my JRPG groups quite frequently and is said to be a good entry point for the series. I've never played a significant amount of any Dragon Quests personally though. I plan to dive into the series once I finish more Persona, SMT, Trails, and Breath of Fire games.

Loved it on PS4, played through everything within a month for 100% trophies, bought it again on Switch, bought it another time for someone else, who still hasn't finished it. :(

dragon quest 11 is easy to get into and enjoyable, probably because of how good it looks

I liked how dq7 was going on the playstation, only got 20 hours in tho

trials of mana is good
xenoblade remastered is good

those are the only rpg's off the top of my head that I'd tell a casual to play

Probably my second favourite DQ behind 8. I definitely recommend playing it.

it's pretty much just final fantasy, but with dragonball characters, with annoying wales english accents, and really stretched out content

If you want the best feeling for the game play it in 2d mode. Otherwise you may avoid too many battles and end up behind a grindwall because alost every fight in 3d is avoidable.

Its not skyrim where you can speed run it

DQ 11 is probably the best introduction to the series overall, extremely polished with basically the best combat system of any DQ game.

If you play DQ 11 and don't like it odds are you would not like any entry in the series.

If you like by-the-book generic JRPG elements rolled up into a story that can be predicted hours ahead of any given curve until the post-game at least, then DQ11 is your game.

I am fine with that stuff personally, especially when we live in a world where every other major JRPG is doing other stuff. Final Fantasy hasn't made a game in that style since FF IX for instance.

DQ harkens back to an older age that is very hard to find in the modern gaming world.

DQXI is a good nostalgic trip through old school JRPG play. It's not revolutionary at all, but it looks great and if you like the formula it's gonna be enjoyable.

It has approximately 10 songs for the entire game, and its fine. Definitely not my favorite, but I didnt feel like I wasted my time.

What a great endorsement, right?

I prefer the Xenoblades and Tales games.

Compared to modern games, it is very good. Some of the characters are very annoying, IMO.

Compared to classic RPGs it doesn't compare. I'd still take DQ III, IV, VIII, & IX ahead of it.

I think for most gamers going back to stuff like DQ 3-4 is pretty rough. The games are archaic as shit, so unless you love old school JRPG's it's' not the best.

VIII is good but it also has it's share of annoying characters.

The characters are flat and the plot is super generic, but it's a classic grindy jrpg, so if you enjoy the genre, you'll probably enjoy the game.

IMO that's its biggest (possibly only) flaw. I immediately started over with hard monsters enabled, but then the monsters are still kind of too easy, but the bosses are way too hard. if they made the monsters tougher and the bosses not so tough it would be a lot more enjoyable. (I don't know what it ends up like on normal though.)
