Hmm well I guess some people are slowly waking up.

These people are quick to refer to SS, Mcaid and Mcare etc as "handouts" and "entitlements" when they themselves are the biggest welfare queens in the country.

SALARIES of the House Speaker: $223,500, Majority and Minority Leaders: $193,400, President Pro Tempore $193,400. Regular members make $174,000. ALL PAID BY TAXPAYERS!

PENSION: As a federal employee, members of Congress can qualify for a pension in addition to Social Security. A member vests a taxpayer funded pension after five years of service and is eligible to receive a pension as early as 50. Full pensions are normally conferred at 62. The irony here being they don't think regular folks should have a pension plan and as we all know most employers in America have done away with company sponsored pension plans that some of our grandparents and parents had during their working lives. That's all gone and now that's left up to people who for the most part make less than $50,000 a year but you're expected to sock away money for your own retirement via IRAs and 401K plans that most hourly paid people can't fully fund.

The average retirement salary annually is roughly $12,000 per month for former members. Federal pensions are classified as "Private Information" because you don't want the very people you're fleecing knowing what you get.

That doesn't include the millions these crooks make from outside deals which violates ethics laws but they do it via loopholes. Some of these people are employed in their districts by federal contractors for selling out the government to the highest bidders both at home and abroad.

At least parts of them are clearly handouts and entitlements. If something is being given for nothing, that's a handout. SS (and to some extent Medicare) is a little stickier because people pay into it, but the amount that certain individuals receive over the life of their involvement in the program can greatly exceed whatever they put into it which is also why it's not a sustainable model. (Which is why SS has sometimes been called the biggest Ponzi scheme of all time.)

Although politicians make outrageous money for what they do, the current rules basically force them to keep two residences so... the job puts some financial demands on them. Granted, welfare queens like Bernie Sanders have clearly enriched themselves through the job, as he started with nothing but with government money only is a multi-millionaire with three houses.

Because most "hate" is meaningless. And it's less surprising that top government members are kept alive than it is lower government posts don't wind up as targets. When you have a security detail, it can be difficult to kill you. However, most normal congresspeople (and senators) aren't always protected. In theory, any motivated wacko with a grudge and a weapon can get at them, which is exactly what we saw when some far-left nut shot up that congressional baseball game. Or when that drugged-out maniac tried to kill Giffords.

To be fair, Amy McGrath was garbage and the DNC predictably shilled for her. She literally ran ads attacking Mitch on the basis of not helping Trump's agenda enough.

I'd have a hard time believing that. It might be that nationally, but that doesn't make much difference on his election prospects.

I bet it's no coincidence that Republicans gave so much power to a guy from a pretty immovable state, there's no real threat of accountability. The Dems are shitty about this too with Pelosi (San Fran) and Schumer (New York).

No, they're voting for him because he gives their state greater influence than it might otherwise have and he's able to bring in a ton of pork. Both of CT's senators are fucking awful, but if they were in a position to bring in spoils for the state and were doing it, I'd support the hell out of them.

"Common sense" wouldn't be overcompensating public servants. If somebody is able to become a multi-millionaire with THREE houses (when manyAmericans don't even own one) through elected office, that's a problem.

And it's laughable that you try to justify it through billionaires' wealth, which demonstrates a fundamental misunderstanding of the public and private sectors, as well as a general willful ignorance of the functioning of both.

You can object to how high government salaries are by simply objecting to them. There's plenty of room to argue that position. One of his houses was inherited from his dead MIL and another is a vacation cabin, or something like that. Maybe those were both, but still. Three houses is not necessarily some indicator of extravagant wealth. Again, his worth is in the low millions. Plenty of people in washington own houses that are individually worth more than his three combined. None of the numbers actually point to this being the huge "gotcha" that you think it is.

Government salaries aren't really that high imo given the area they work in and the unique demands of the job like travel, etc. The problem is the amount of money they get from kickbacks. It's a livable salary plus has plenty of great benefits, nobody should need that extra on the side to begin with. Many are just using the office to get as rich as possible and that's horribly wrong.
