He also pardoned a few good guys though... but it is dumb that he pardoned a lot of his personal friends

Overlooking that they're not "personal friends" (maybe excluding Kushner), that's literally how pardons usually work. They tend to go towards people connected to the president, his allies, or his party.

I want to see Trump pardon himself.
That will be an interesting entry into our history books.

We really need some rules around presidential pardon powers.

SCOTUS is a reactionary body so we'll only see it ruled by them if a president ever pardons themself.

Don't forget Manafort - they had a bromance in the 70s

I wasn't speaking just to that, even the fact that a president can pardon his own associates is an issue.

It's weird how Trump is pardoning his cronies and war criminals like a week after rushing the executions of those on death row

Is he law and order or is he fucking not

The problem is that the founders seemingly didn't likely foresee somebody so unqualified and unsuited to the office to win the presidency.

They also didn't think people would be able to hide behind the 2nd amendment for hate speech and defamation.

they should be allowed to say what they want, and face consequences. it shouldn't be illegal just because it's hateful

The most corrupt president in US history is teaching us how our institutions fail when so much of them depend on us choosing the best of us to hold office.

Needless to say time for a constitutional amendment doing away with pardons.

Regardless of what you think about this set of pardons, this is overkill. Some adjustments to the system could be made but the idea behind pardons is that they exist to provide a counterbalance to the shortcomings of the judiciary

How about POTUS can only give one pardon a month, and it's "use it or lose it", i.e. no saving them up until December and granting 12.

I would say set up some kind of bipartisan committee to review potential pardons before approval but then you would just have dems and repubs stuffing any pardons from presidents from the other side of the aisle

I don't mind the idea of there being some means to overrule the judicial branch when they do something questionable, but if it's going to be left entirely to the unchecked, capricious whims of a single person, it'd probably be better to just use a random number generator.

Tbh, I think pardoning should be done by a specific group of people assigned solely to that purpose who don't have a party affiliation- none of this governor/president shit- and I do not think that members of the Supreme Court, House, Senate, or the president/vice president should be eligible for pardons.

Pardons are being used by a criminal to reward his co-conspirators for not selling him out.
