What's the answer?

This is one of those questions that will stump a massive majority of people as no one will get or even understand but for those math geniuses, they can get the answer if you just use your mathematical skills.

This is a question from asia where someone was working in a math book and came across this very difficult question that has people stumped...but can you get the answer?.

There are actually a few different answers depending on how you want to solve it.

I'm assuming they meant 15 as the actual answer but there's at least 3 numbers that work off the top of my head.

I see 15 as working but not sure why it's fundamentally better than 5. I feel like I'm seeing 15 for a different reason than you are

15:
The left and right side are equal when you add them up
4 + 7 = 11
5 + 6 = 11
9 + 8 = 17
10 + 7 = 17
11 + 12 = 23
23 - 8 = 15

There's no criteria given for the pattern, so you can come up with any inductive reasoning and claim it's correct, and nobody can tell you otherwise. Therefore I'm sticking with my answer, even though I concede that 15 is a better response.

Another way to get 15

4 + 5 + 6 + 7 = 22
7 + 8 + 9 + 10 = 34
34 - 22 = 12
34 + 12 = 46
46 - 12 - 11 - 8 = 15

Here you are discussing those two particular answer choices when the image clearly states that the missing number is 2. It was staring us in the face the whole time. In support of this logic one need merely look nearby where there is an X. That is what you put on a map when you want to find something once lost. All of the other numbers there are clearly found and organized, but the 2 is far away awaiting future discovery.

I found 5 before I found 15.

My mind prefers 5 even though I will concede they both fit potential patterns.

That's what I was thinking

That they messed up and that the 8 in the last box should be a 13. Then this pattern would hold: lowest # in top left, number increases by 1 moving clockwise, corresponding square in each new iteration is +3

15 is not a better response.

The pattern looks to be the top left square is 3 less than the bottom left square and the top right square is 1 less than the bottom right square.

In which you get 5.

If you do it to the right squares you would get 10 to fit the pattern.

For the people adding the vertical rows and saying the left has to equal the right thus it is 15... there is a reason it isn't so.

Why add the vertical rows to be equal to be the pattern? Why not the horizontal rows? In which the top is always 4 less than the bottom row. Thus, the answer again would be 5 to make it 4 less than the bottom row.

Thus, you get 5 for 2 answers, 10 for 1, and 15 for 1. 5 is the best answer.

The first 2 cubes follow a clear pattern. So of course the 3rd cube ruins it with an 8.

I voted 10 just because but it's probably wrong. But then again I doubt there's a good answer to this mess.

I suppose there's an unwritten, implied requirement that the pattern must include all the numbers shown. Without that you can come up with multiple solutions by just ignoring some of the numbers. Logic problems always need precise language as to not be ambiguous. Math nerds, is there some specific mathematical definition of "pattern" that would clear up any confusion?

yes

Something along the lines of "A pattern is a consistent rule that must include all the numbers shown. You cannot come up with multiple solutions by just ignoring some of the numbers"

13.

Top left, Top Right, and bottom left are always sequential
Each box only contains ONE instance of a number from the box that proceeds it. The third set has an 8, thus eliminating 10. Therefore it must be 13.
