I think a very standard pro-free speech argument is what you've set up here, and I think there's a lot of truth to the fact that popular ideas aren't targeted first when getting rid of free speech.

Misguided personal opinions aside...

I do not now, nor will I ever, support a law that punishes free speech based on political ideals. Even if the ideals are reprehensible, it's our job as citizens to win people over with debate and sincerity, not an oppressive anti-speech/anti-association law.
